Laboratory Technician Review

I am a Level 1 Laboratory Technician and have several labs which I maintain. My job role involves the checking/restocking of consumables, ordering, housekeeping i.e. mopping floors/ decontaminating surfaces, disposing of non hazardous waste, and other more advanced technical activities. I liaise with members of my team, scientists and other individuals across departments.

I have developed skills in communication and have attended many internal training courses to ensure that I am competent for the work I am undertaking. I have and continue to build positive relationships with individuals I work with and am respected for the work that I do. I have become more confident and outgoing.

I highly enjoy my apprenticeship. The work is extremely rewarding and I have built many friendships with those I work with. I gain a lot of satisfaction from maintaining my laboratories and seeing them used. I also find the technical work extremely interesting. It has provided me with the opportunity to earn whilst I learn.

Extremely valued. I feel as though I am respected by the individuals that I work with and am valued by my fellow team members. I have already received an award in the 5+ months I have been with DSTL. I have worked with a variety of different projects within the organisation, even providing assistance at short notice for one in particular. For this I was thanked by my line manager.

Very well. On arrival to the organisation I recieved a formal induction and have attended all mandatory training courses. I was also directed to additional training which may be useful. I know that I can rely on my line manager and members of my team for support if necessary. I am given opportunities to dedicate my time solely to studying, and work with projects which will support my NVQ/ Technical certificate.

I recieve a lot of support from my training provider. I have the contact details of both my tutors and individuals from the supporting college. I email my tutors on a regular basis to submit assignments or ask questions.

I receieve a lot of support from my employer. My line manager is extremely friendly and understanding, and happy to help in any way that he can. Members of my team and those in wider departments are also extremely willing to help me with my studies where possible.

I still live at home with my parents which eliminates many costs. Whilst the wages for the apprenticeship could obviously be significantly higher, I value the training that is provided alongside. I work 30-40 mins from home so spend around £40 per week on petrol.

Yes. I still maintain many personal hobbies outside of work and the flexible working arrangements enable me to fit my home life around working life. There are many events within the company, as well as sporting clubs and a gym.

There are opportunities to progress in your career within the organisation and the flexible working arrangements and sick pay are extremely helpful. There are also opportunities to work from home which is useful for studying. The work is also extremely rewarding.

Take as many opportunities as possible and ask questions. Security clearance can take varying lengths of time so be patient. Make use of civil service benefits for employees.
