  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I joined the Civil Service in September 2014 on the Civil Service Fast Track Apprenticeship Scheme; I started as a Capability Practitioner in HMRC’s Chief Technology Office. In November 2016, I was promoted to a Business Analyst. I am now responsible for providing day-to-day analytics and leadership within multi-disciplinary teams to support the biggest digital operation in Government.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Civil Service?
  • At the start of my apprenticeship, I was worried that I would be treated like a temporary member of staff but I immediately felt like I was part of a team and making a real difference. I have been overwhelmed with support, guidance and opportunities to help me develop in confidence.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The day-to-day activities with HMRC are very well organised, but the Fast Track Apprenticeship Scheme (Capita) were very unorganised. As an external candidate I found the process extremely unorganised and unprofessional.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • Unfortunately, I have an extremely long commute to work, but it's worthwhile as the salary/package HMRC offer is very attractive. This is especially true whilst on the Fast Track Apprenticeship Scheme.

    7/10

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • There are plenty of opportunities outside of work, as the Fast Track Apprenticeship Scheme always require volunteers to share their experiences, inform on the application process and speak about opportunities on the scheme. In addition, HMRC are part of CSSC Sports & Leisure which offer a wide range of extra curricular activities.

  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • The Civil Service Fast-Track Scheme is a two year scheme; with a permanent role upon completion. Opportunity to apply for 5 different frameworks; Business Administration, Commercial, Cyber Security, Digital & Technology and Finance. Roles within HMRC, DWP, Department for Transport, Ministry of Defence etc. Join at Executive Officer grade, giving you the opportunity to develop essential skills that will help progress through your career.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Civil Service?
  • I have found that the most challenging aspect of the scheme is managing my time effectively i.e. between work and study. Also, the 3-Stage application process; Online Application, Online Tests and Assessment Day is challenging.
