  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Currently working in MBDA's Commercial function which provides direction, guidance and support on all aspects of winning and delivering business. Daily tasks include being the main customer point of contact across a number of projects, internal bid management/new business acquisition, contract management/maintenance. Daily internal interaction include working with delegated Project Managers to ensure the contract is maintained in such a way to ensure the best contractual position for MBDA. External interactions include regular liaison with customer counterparts across the UK and Italy to answer customer queries, submit deliverables and keep them updated with current issues across the project. Projects - a number of different programmes with a primary focus on the UK, with limited dealings with Italy.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Qualifications - studying toward a Degree in Business Studies and a Level 4 Business Administration NVQ. Opportunities for both on the job and off the job training identified based on placement requirements and experiences through previous placements in the subject areas. Training courses include; IPR, Risk Management, MoD Terms and Conditions, Project Management Induction Course, Financial awareness, Procurement Sourcing Training, Equality & Diversity, Manual Handling & Export Control. Residential training course - Life Skills. Enhance skills in key areas such as Project Management, Presentation Skills Adaptability, Results orientation etc. good focus on learning and development within MBDA, number of internal training courses which can be attended based on user need.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Lots of benefits of working for MBDA, including Flexible working hours, work life balance and share incentive plans. Work is very engaging and is within a Sector I am passionate about, which keeps me very interested in the detail behind the work I am doing. I have been able to represent the company as a STEM Ambassador, Business Advisor on the Young Enterprise programme and a Apprenticeship advocate through my engagement with stakeholders I have engaged with.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by MBDA?
  • Strong appreciation from manager, suppliers and customers. Recognition for achievement. However, culture of aging workforce creates level of scepticism amongst colleagues very early in their career.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Very well structured, ranging from set induction and training courses, necessary support teams in place. Work life balance allows time to study and the majority of managers are very accepting of University requirements and support this. Additional courses are not so well organised e.g. NVQ, but this is up to Apprentice to manage their workload.

  • Competitive pay, increases based on University and Placement performances. Degree subsidisation and funding for training assists this further.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • Yes. I have represented MBDA at schools on career days, schools working on the Young Enterprise programme, events MBDA sponsor e.g. SEMTA skills awards, social club including gym & annual football and cricket competitions, represented MBDA at meetings with Suppliers, Customers, University Dean's & assisting days for MBDA stakeholders e.g. RAF Friends & Family days.

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • plenty of internal and external opportunities on the scheme, where I benefit from a hugely subsidised degree programme and work experience in an exciting industry, where we are given the opportunity to be representatives of a multi billion euro company.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to MBDA?
  • Research the company and scheme before applying. Develop a portfolio to evidence your successes. Outline weakness areas and how you are attempting to address these.
