  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My job title is Technician Engineer, I am based on site. My daily tasks vary from day to day, one day I will be doing surveys, one day quality checks, one day snagging, one day setting out etc etc. I am only 6 months in so my responsibilities aren't major but I feel I have been given a lot of responsibilities for my role. I am working on a school project spanning over 7 schools so plenty of moving around the 4 sites I am heavily involved with. The experiences I have gained so far have been brilliant and can't wait to learn more.

  • I have learnt numerous skills in my time so far. as I had never worked in construction before everything was pretty new to me. using lasers, EDMS and measuring etc. the way to set things out and the way to present data. I have also been given opportunities to do extra training. I have been on a Fire Marshall course and have a setting out course scheduled for a couple of months time. I have also learnt professional and personal skills on how to represent myself and the company and how to write professional emails and documents.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy my programme thoroughly. I feel I have been given plenty of opportunities for my development. the team I work with is excellent and always happy to help. I was a little worried about the culture as the stereotype of construction doesn't seem that good for women. but it is very different, I have had no issues in feeling under valued or anything as a women.

  • 9. Would you recommend Laing O'Rourke to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend Laing O'Rourke as it is a great company to work for. I feel like a valued piece in the company. I feel well looked after in the company and have been given lots and lots of opportunities to develop personally and professionally. The range of projects is vast from little to big all over the country.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Laing O'Rourke?
  • the application process can feel quite long, but I would tell them to stick with it and try there hardest. There is an online aptitude test which was quite challenging just make sure you do all the practice questions and wont have any distractions. Then there is a phone interview. Then there is an assessment day. At this there is around 5 or 6 other applicants, we did a group discussion my advice for this part is to make sure you input. Don't over input but take charge if you need to. Make sure your voice and opinion is heard. Then you have an interview and a small presentation for both of these be honest and confident. It is one to one and all the people that where doing mine where very nice and make you feel at ease. The interview is example based questions asking things like - "give me an example of when you showed initiative" or "give me an example of when you showed confidence or team work" etc. etc. Also they wont expect you to know specifics about the industry or profession you are applying for, however this said they will expect you to know about the company read the website, look at the projects they are doing, pick a favourite this will show you have looked into it and have an interest. Another great thing that helped me along was organising some work experience for myself. I just did a week on a site close to home (one I now have worked on full time). Just doing the one week helped me see how good the company is and gave me lots and lots to talk about in the interviews and applications etc.
