  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am training to be a Building Services Engineer with a weekly day release to university to study a part time degree in the same subject. Very rarely do I end up carrying out the same tasks on a daily basis. Currently my role entails dealing with designers, architects and a number of sub-contractors allowing me always to meet new people, build a network and face new challenges.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • My ability to tackle high pressure situations, review my performance and see how I can improve individually and as a member of a team has grown massively. These skills will hopefully make me better equipped to deal with challenges within my current role and hopefully any in the future.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • On the number of projects I have been based on I have always found myself surrounded by a good group of people who have made the experience so far a lot more enjoyable. However the balance between working full time and university can be incredibly challenging, but the benefits in the long run will be massive (mainly no student debt!)

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Laing O'Rourke?
  • With the responsibilities and packages I have been asked to deal with I feel valued by my current and previous manages. One such package I was asked to deliver was worth £1million and I successfully delivered it on time and on budget which was very rewarding. Understandably you do not always receive direct vocal recognition but to see what your work in the finished article is a pretty good feeling.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Yes, a lot of time has been put into the program, and we are regularly asked for feedback o how they can improve it for future applicants.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • Within reason I can ask for assistance or guidance at any point from a number of individuals and hope for an awesome within a short space of time.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • For personal reasons the companies HR and internal benefits have supported me massively.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • For someone of my age the salary is very competitive, and rises with every year of the program as I gain more experience and become more qualified. All expenses (travelling costs) are covered by the company, which is an enormous benefit when working in London! I personally enjoy to travel and with the projects I have worked on, training programs and future opportunities it has benefitted me in abundance!

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • Laing O'Rourke as a company host company events, activities and volunteering initiatives that vary on scale. Individual project teams also run their own social events from which I have had some quite crazy and hilarious experiences!

  • 9. Would you recommend Laing O'Rourke to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • Engineering was not something that appealed to me while in education mainly because I was driven towards other careers. However the ever changing role, financial benefits, free university and invaluable work experience will leave me in a very handy position in two years time once I have completed the program.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Laing O'Rourke?
  • During the interviews and assessment days show a degree of excitement and a want to succeed in the role. Despite being a challenging role they are looking for people with all round qualities who want to thrive within the environment
