  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • As a Tax Trainee I am responsible for the preparation of both Individual and Corporate Tax Returns. I regularly liaise with the Accounts & Audit teams to obtain the necessary information needed to establish a companies/individuals taxable profits/income. I also make Phone calls to HMRC to discuss clients' tax affairs on a regular basis.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I am currently training towards my ATT and CTA qualifications. All exam material, college days and exam entry are provided as well as annual study leave days that can be used at any point during the year. Internal training sessions are also held regularly. I have learnt/am learning the advanced ins and outs of accounting, personal income tax & capital gains tax, business tax and corporation tax.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Very much so. The day to day work is very interesting, seeing the accounts of large companies and working with high net worth individuals offers something different each day. The company is great, there is always a social/sporting event available to attend both during and outside of work hours. They are very good at motivating staff and keeping them entertained.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Mazars LLP?
  • Very. There's always someone to available to offer help with work and exams. Mentors are also provided so that you have a specific person to contact with any queries/concerns. Feedback and opinions are always sought after so that they can improve the work place. And as above, there is always an event to attend that is either paid for or subsidised.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The first few weeks are spent away from the office on induction/training courses so that you're prepared for the work you'll be doing. Study and development plans are put in place so that you know what you're towards. Mentors and managers help with your progress through meetings and appraisals. The team hierarchy is easy to understand, different responsibilities are held at each level. It would be nice to have a long term plan so that you could see how you'll progress over the course of the programme with key dates etc. but it's not hard to find that information out should you need it.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • They provide all of the exam material, college days and tutors. All are really good quality and you're provided with everything you'll need to pass your exams. The only problems I've had are with the admin team and website, although, this doesn't affect your training or exam results so it doesn't matter too much.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • The foundations are put in place for your exams and the help is always available, but your hand isn't held and you should be keeping on top of your own work and know how your course and exams are structured. The support is available but your progress should be your own responsibility. Could maybe be a bit more support but at the same time you don't want to be treated like a school student rather than a school leaver.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • Salary is as expected for a school leaver with no professional qualifications or experience. All exam and study expenses are paid for however, which if sat independently cost a lot of money, so when factored in, your salary and benefits are very good. An interest free loan is also available when you first start to help pay for any initial costs i.e. suits, cars, living expenses etc. should you need it.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • Yes. Sport and social teams regularly organise events, most are paid for by Mazars, the rest are usually subsidised. Individual teams often go out for food/drinks to celebrate meeting targets. National events such as charity bike rides are also arranged throughout the year. You're also entitled to one CSR day a year to use whenever you want where you can get out of the office for a day and help the community/charity.

  • 9. Would you recommend Mazars LLP to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • The qualifications and experience you get over the course of the programme are the same as you'd receive at any other accountancy firm, however it's a much more enjoyable place to work. There's a huge support network, great exposure to clients, good career progression and there's loads of opportunities outside of the office. They're also one of the fastest growing accountancy firms and have won numerous awards in recent years.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Mazars LLP?
  • Make sure you're applying to your most suitable role - don't just apply to audit because it is the most common. There's a lot of different service lines, pick your favourite. Learn a bit about Mazars and our culture, make sure YOU know why you want to work here before you try to convince your interviewer that you want to. As long as you're applying for the right reasons and you're passionate about the role and Mazars, you should be fine.
