Laboratory analyst apprentice Review

Laboratory Analyst Apprenticeship I perform release testing on GSK medicines and drugs. On a daily basis I interact with other people in the lab in my department.

I previously had no lab experience and can now perform a variety chemical testing in different laboratories. I have learnt to work with different computer databases and am currently studying applied science btec on day release.

I enjoy working in the team and think there are lots of opportunities in this company. I was unsure what to expect before the apprenticeship but am now sure I made the right choice. I enjoy working in different areas on a rotation scheme ( I work 6 months in each department).

The company gives us 6 monthly pay rises and reviews our performance regularly which reflects how they think we are doing as apprentices. I think through these rewards our work is recognised. I have been involved in the Big Bang Science fair in march and would like more opportunities to be involved in more things like this.

Work is well organised. The induction was clear but training varies from department to department but overall is of a good standard. Studying on day release has not been as well organised as it does not relate well to work and covers basic theory which I do not use in my work. I feel GSK could of looked into different courses more as I understand it is part of the apprenticeship but find it isnt relevant to industry or the practical work I do. My mentor has helped me alot through the apprenticeship with advice and I know who to go with if I have problems. Generally I feel the overall programme is well organised.

Our tutors are helpful in class but hard to contact outside of our one day allocated college time. I feel there is not much communciation between college and work and we dont have any support on the days when we are not at college.

My employer is very supportive and I know where to go if I have problems of any kind. The company seems quite pro active although I have not had any problems so have not required any particular support.

Happy with my salary. We get 6 monthly pay reviews and so far I am pleased to say I think mine have been done fairly. I am not local so have high travel costs but I feel it is worth it, I still have money to socialise and live. Obviously I would prefer to earn more and eventually like to relocate nearer to work.

There are company run events, the gym, a social club and lots of other things to participate in. Generally I go to the gym and the social club although there are more options if I wanted.
