  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I work in Technology managing the Demand of SWIFT requests into our SWIFT Infrastructure team. My role involves fielding all requests into the department, deciding what technical build the requestor requires and which team is best placed to do this on our applications. I carry out analysis on each request, checking our applications for current build and routing rules. I produce all reports for our team and support out Business Development roles with service analysis and invoicing.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Starting JP Morgan with no technical background, I was worried that I would struggle in my role. However both the schools team and my department have been very supportive and I've managed to learn all aspects of my role with continuous training and support. I've carried out training with various members of our Tech and Ops teams in order to gain an overall understanding of our applications. As a supporting part of our 'Tech Fest' I have organized several sessions on personal development as I feel this is a key area. I've attended courses on soft skills such as presenting and public speaking and attended talks from inspirational women as part of our 'Woman in Technology' group. As part of the apprenticeship I have completed the CISI Introduction to Securities and Investments, Risk in Financial Services and IT in Investment Operations exams which have provided me with a knowledge on the financial world and aspects within this.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy both my work and the apprenticeship and very happy to have made this choice over University. Not only am I gaining a qualification, but I've learnt in depth knowledge of my department which I couldn't have learnt anywhere else. My team have been very supportive of my progress and have helped wherever they can to ensure I keep progressing as the apprenticeship goes on. JP Morgan as a whole is a great place to work with a really positive atmosphere and working environment. I was surprised at how friendly and helpful everyone is even though it is a large company. Helping out with the schools team by attending careers fairs and carrying out mock interviews has greatly increased my confidence and ease when talking to a large group of people.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by J.P. Morgan?
  • I often receive 'E-cards' or emails recognizing work that I've done well which I feel is great to receive when you're still new to a job. My team treat me as level with them and value my work just the same. I recently changed managers, but my old manager still offers to help me if I need it, which is really supportive in a programme like this. I do the same job as my team, despite my lack of experience as they have trained me from day 1.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The apprenticeship has been well structured from the beginning, with the two week introduction bootcamp, followed by exam/lecture timetables and all events being published in advance to ensure you are able to get time out of the office. As part of the apprenticeship you are assigned a 'buddy' in the cohort above. This has been a great help in understanding the small things that you wouldn't take to your manager. The schools team are very supportive and will help out with any situation they are needed in.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • For our portfolio of evidence we are assigned someone from the training provider to assess and help us through the process. I've found this very useful and feel comfortable phoning/emailing him whenever I need help with something.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • The support received is great, you never feel like you're going through something alone. From work problems to personal problems, there is always someone to talk to and help you get through it. My manager and the schools team have gone above and beyond in every situation I've brought to them, reassuring me and helping me to resolve it.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • The salary is enough to cover my expenses and since I'm still living at home I have managed to save money whilst being on the apprenticeship. I am looking at renting soon and the current salary will still leave me with money to spend after costs.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • I have been lucky enough to be involved in work with the local community, schools events and many 'Women in Technology' events. One of my most notable events was the 2016 Round the Island race where I was chosen out of 50 apprentices to sail round the Isle of Wight. This was a great opportunity to network with senior employees and those outside of my department, along with the fun of my first time sailing!

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • I would definitely recommend J.P. Morgan to a friend as it is a great alternative to university. I definitely feel I have learnt more than I would have taking another route. In fact I already recommended the apprenticeship to a couple of people from school who have since joined the scheme.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to J.P. Morgan?
  • The application process is difficult, but it's important to just be yourself. J.P Morgan want to hire and mix of different people, so it's important to show your personality and what you could bring to the company. Although the process seems scary when meeting managers, it's probably just as scary for them! It's important to get involved in external activities but keep a good balance between your day job and other commitments.
