  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • From the industry I work in I have developed a better understanding of adhesive materials. I have gained a strong understanding of how each 3M division fits into the business as a whole. I have an understanding of the process involved in launching a new product. I have learned how to work with different groups of people and managing different projects at once. I understand how to use digital in the workplace, and some of the best ways it can be implemented.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy the culture and atmosphere at 3M within my team. The staff are welcoming to new people, and are free to answer any questions. Sometimes work can be slow or dragging, and at other times can be intense. I enjoy the programme here, as I'm given the opportunity to try different aspects of marketing.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by 3M UK?
  • I do feel valued within 3M, however I would like to be provided with more tasks and responsibilities than I am now. My manager does appreciate the work I do, and does offer feedback and advice for my work.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Training is hosted externally through QA Apprenticeships, and is of mostly good quality. 3M offers me a couple hours a week to study if I need to. My line manager meets with me at least once a week for a one to one catch up on how I feel I am doing on the course, if I have any issues etc. The team is structured by having product portfolio's given to each product manager and they then become responsible for these. I report directly to one of these managers and it clearly identifies my position within the business.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • I go into training roughly once a month to complete my course in digital marketing. I also meet with an assessor once every 6 weeks so she can check I have done the work I have been set as well as mark it and sign it off as finished. My account manager from my apprenticeship company meets with me or phones me every so often to discuss how I am doing at 3M.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My manager is friendly and always open to discussion if I have any issues. While I'm aware we have a HR team, I'm not sure how I would contact them if I had a problem! My training assessor is friendly and is always happy to discuss anything work or non-work related.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • Like most apprentices here at 3M, I live at home. Recently I've started driving in. My salary covers the cost of driving considering I don't have to pay living costs. I have enough money to cover social costs to a reasonable extent. My Salary is better than most apprentices at my level

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • I've had the opportunity to travel to 3M's Manchester offices and stayed 2 nights and in February will travel to Hinckley for my business groups conference. There are multiple clubs and societies that are organised by 3M workers. There have been opportunities to visit customers, for instance a member of my team had the opportunity to visit Sunseekers Luxury Yacht site.

  • 9. Would you recommend 3M UK to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • As an apprentice 3M pays well, offers a variety of roles, is encouraging to new staff, and offers many opportunities at the end of the course.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to 3M UK?
  • Remember that above all else 3M will judge you based on your own merit more than they will qualifications. They are looking for someone who they know will fit in well within a team and is eager to learn new skills. Having an interest in some of 3M's industries is also a bonus.
