I am a trainee quantity surveyor with a variety of responsibilities on my project. I assist the project quantity surveyor on a daily basis with procuring and managing the cost of packages for a construction project. I also chair pre-contract meetings with subcontractors and create orders/ contracts for them.
Morgan Sindall are supporting me in studying a degree qualification in quantity surveying which has naturally meant that I learn a lot while at university. I have also learnt a lot about contracts and contract management through my day-to-day activities. I have been trained on a number of internal software required to carry out daily tasks. I have also gained public speaking skills through community engagement events and being a construction ambassador
Thoroughly enjoy the day to day working within the environment that I'm in - the open plan office encourages collaboration and teamwork. Everyone on the site is very supportive and approachable. Occasionally the balance between work and university is difficult if a busy working period coincides with coursework/ exams.
Encouragement and recognition for good work is regular from my colleagues on the site team. Senior management also make an interest in how you are doing and are quick to notify you when you are doing well. The responsibility which I have received on this job is evidence that I am considered a reliable and valued member of the team.
Initially the trainee programme lacked structure, however Morgan Sindall have recently revised their approach to managing and developing trainees. This is still in the early stages however the ideas sound good and I look forward to the new programme being put in place.
At university the tutors and lecturers are particularly supportive of part time students. While they expect a lot from you in terms of knowledge they are more accommodating due to the fact you have less time than other students.
My manager is also very supportive. He was new to the business at the same time as me so we have learned a lot about the business together and developed a strong working relationship. I find that he is approachable and understands my capabilities and needs as a trainee. The HR team have been reasonably accommodating however there have been times when I feel more could have been done to help with queries and issues.
Salary is sufficient and is reviewed annually. I think for someone at my stage in my career the money is good however I know that this is not the best paying business for trainees. My travel allowance does not cover the cost of fuel to reach my place of work however I does reduce the costs.
there are semi-regular team building events within my site team which helps to build relations with colleagues. Outwith regular business I have taken part in school visits and careers events. Beyond that I don't have time for much else other than university work and my own hobbies.
Yes
Overall I have had a very positive experience since I started here. It is a company which takes an interest in it's people and treats young and inexperienced workers with extra care. The trainee program is a great opportunity for those looking to get work experience at a top company and receive a degree.
Approach the process with an open mind and be sure to put yourself across as much as possible. Be sure to ask questions and get to know people because everyone is very helpful and welcoming.
