  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am currently in a DevOps role within CGI. Daily tasks include the following: maintenance and troubleshooting of cloud servers, deploying new services within Docker to the cloud, automating deployments with Ansible/Puppet and configuring continuous integration with Jenkins.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Given I started the Apprenticeship with very little Software Development knowledge, I've learned my entire skill set through my Apprenticeship including Java, Project Management with Agile, Data modeling, Javascript, Docker, Ansible, Cloud management with Azure, Jenkins and more. This has been through a combination of courses provided by QA the qualifications body and personal learning at work.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The culture within the workplace is great, and exceeded my expectations of what working for such a large corporate company would feel like. I have a great relationship with many of my colleagues and, even with the few people I don't know, feel like I am part of one greater team.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by CGI?
  • Recognition and appreciation for both external and internal achievements in CGI is abundant. There are praises given every week to members of the company for their work for the centre itself, but also Apprentices like myself have been commended on the completion of our QA courses.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The training courses have been structured well from the beginning, with only some minor changes to the schedule throughout the 2 year period. Our assessor from QA comes out periodically to appraise our progress and ensure we are achieving the correct milestones.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • As previously mentioned we receive a lot of support from our assessor, who we are free to contact at any point if we are having issues.

    9/10

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Personally, I feel I am able to approach any member of the company for support as I am confident they will be happy to help. We have the constant support of Line/Career managers; we have an "Apprentice Champion" who is happy to raise any questions or concerns to management. Overall I think we have a highly respectable level of support.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • I am completely content and in fact grateful for the salary I receive.

    9/10

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • We regularly attend tech meet-ups which colleagues will advertise to gauge interest and then organise attendance.

    7/10

  • 9. Would you recommend CGI to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Great culture, opportunity and support to grow and build a career.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to CGI?
  • In terms of interviewing, show that you want the opportunity to learn from the company as much as work for them.
