Electrical Engineer Apprentice Review

As an apprentice at stannah, they moved me round the factory into different departments to give me a better understanding of the process, the machines and the running of the factory. When I finally made a move into the maintenance department which I was to stay in I then had to learn how to maintain and repair assembly lines, machines and vehicles.

Once in maintenance, I began getting put on various courses giving me the ability to use forklifts, scissor lifts and boom lifts as well as learn to PAT test. As I carried out my job my skills for fault finding and my knowledge of machines improved.

The team I work with is small and quite close, they helped me and supervised me when I needed it but gave me the chance to be independent and carry out my own work. I also enjoyed being given my own small projects to work on.

I think I'm valued at stannah because when jobs are carried out most people can be appreciative of the work you have done. With some bigger jobs my manager has come out to look at the work and given me feedback and shown an interest in the work I have carried out. Some jobs have also meant a special thanks from the stannah family and a paid meal for others.

Throughout the apprenticeship I knew what I was doing, and if I had any questions I could easily ask and they be answered. If I had any concerns I knew who to talk to and could easily ask for training if they thought it was a good idea.

For the majority of my apprenticeship the tutors were really good and knew what they were doing. There were times where I would of liked there to have been a consistent tutor who knew what they were doing when it came to our project.

I was always given help when I needed it, and they gave me time to work on some assignments if I needed it. They also helped and funded my college project which really helped and helped me to progress my project.

The starting wage was brilliant considering my age and what other engineering places offered. Although I would of liked a better progression of pay. I think that it would of encouraged apprentices to work harder.

The company paid for the department to go out for meals and bowling to build the team outside of work. The department being a small team made the most of this provision. The company also would encourage employees from different departments to come together to create a team for local community projects.

Its a great company to start your career and pays well for someone leaving school. It is also a company that will look after you and has quite good job security.

If you see training opportunities, push for them and ask about them. When you can look up information for your manager to help push for the training.
