  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I do classroom work and practical work. This involves learning new units in the classroom such as electrical component. The practical work involves making circuits in the electrical lab such as a sawtooth oscillator.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have developed my practical skills, such as soldering and fault finding in the electrical lab. I have also learnt how to use CAD software to electrically draw out circuits.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy my programme as it is quite varied. We do a lot of practical and theory work on a daily basis. This keeps the day interesting and moving.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Dstl?
  • I feel appreciated by DSTL as I received an award for putting in extra effort for a task. I am included within group tasks and feel my ideas are listened to.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • We had a two week induction before staring the course. This included training in manual handling and fire training. My course is split into blocks so I know what I will be doing at all points of my course.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • If I need any extra support then I can ask for extra help from any of the tutors. They are usually available to go and speak to and are able to sort out my problem.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • It is usually easy to get hold of my line manager if I have any questions. I do this by email or phone, and she will usually respond within the day.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • My salary covers my cost from travelling in everyday and my living cost. When I become a second year apprentice my salary will go up.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • There are lots of social events organised by an onsite team. They include trips out to local points such as Stonehenge and Bournemouth beach. They also include activities such as rock climbing and mountain biking.

  • 9. Would you recommend Dstl to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • They are a friendly company that looks intimating from the outside, but they are quite relaxed. They look after their staff well and you will always be fully trained.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Dstl?
  • I chose this career path because I did Physics and Maths at school and I find engineering interesting. It is unlike my previous job which was a being a waitress.
