  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Definitely. My ability to design on multiple CAD softwares has improved massively. My understanding of the process of a project has improved and I can now relate to different stages in the project, understanding fully of what needs to be done. Communication and my ability to work in a team has improved greatly. My confidence has improved because I feel more capable and competent to understand and complete a task that a colleague sets out for me.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Atkins?
  • I feel quite valuable at times. As a company, Atkins make you feel valued due to the benefits of working for the company such as being financially comfortable etc. In the office, colleagues are always asking can I do this can I do that and that makes me feel like people can trust me and are happy to give me responsibility to complete a task.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Reasonably well organised. It took a while for people (myself included) to understand what the programme consists of and what is expected of myself and line manager. I feel there needs to be more frequent and organised communication from the college to training provider to my line manager.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • Good amount of support. I meet with my training officer once every 6-8 weeks and we have a chat for around 1 hour to 1:30 mins. He asks if theres any problems at work, at home etc. We talk about work load, college work, the college itself and whether im happy with how things are going at Atkins.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • A lot of support when its needed. I haven't needed to much support, I've settled quickly and easily. I know lots of people around the office so im comfortable talking to people that aren't in my team. My manager is helpful. If im quiet and I've not much to work on, he sorts a variety of work out for me. I know if I have a problem, I can talk to him about it. I've been off ill for two days and he was very supportive and understanding and suggested that I should go home halfway through the day. Support is very good at Atkins.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • Very well, I class the salary I earn is very good for a first year apprentice. I appreciate them investing in me and my education. I still live at home with parents so no issues there. I drive, so my salary helps cover the cost of my car and fuel. I only live around 15 minutes away from Warrington so travelling isn't too much of an issue apart from frequently being gridlocked on the M6.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • Yes. Atkins put social events on for my sector. Trips to restaurants, bars in Manchester and Liverpool etc. I think the races has been mentioned too.

  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Atkins is a fantastic company to work for. They have some of the best engineering projects in the country to work on. The work we do is very interesting and enjoyable at the same time. Working on the projects gives you a sense of satisfaction because the work you do can make a difference and benefit the infrastructure of the UK.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Atkins?
  • Give it your best attempt and just be yourself. The people that work here are good, honest, hard working people so Atkins will only continue to employ those of that kind. If you feel you're that and you have the graded then apply. It is definitely worth it.
