My role in work, is server administrator. During this role I maintain the working order of the servers. My role mostly contains maintenance work, ie. fixing anything that goes wrong with the servers in general. We also take charge of patching, and installing software onto the machines.
Yes I have learned many new skills while working in my job, including a better understanding of windows operating systems, some unix related functionality as well as database and network solutions.
I enjoy working as part of a team in Fujitsu, and the contract in particular that I work on, is well run and helps me learn all the valuables skills.
I do believe that Fujitsu value their apprentices, however compared to the apprenticeship run over in England itself, I do believe more can be done, to make apprentices feel more valued.
I believe that the programme was organised fairly poorly. We did not receive a proper induction into the work place, but the main issue was the way that the college itself organised the apprenticeship work. Apprentices in my year, didn't know exactly what work had to be done until the last moment in most cases.
Support is provided, when requested. Mostly notes for assignments or exams.
Support from Fujitsu is a lot better. Employees themselves are normally happy to sit down and take us through any areas which we are finding difficult to understand. Also Fujitsu is always willing to let us take time off for revision and exams when needed.
I don't believe that the current salary is enough for apprentices. Living in a city and having a wife and mortgage to support combined with travel and daily living costs, the salary just does not cut it. If it wasn't for the fact that I get overtime work (which is highly unusual for an apprentice), I don't believe I would have been able to survive, and even then it is just about enough to stay afloat.
Yes and No. There are opportunities to work along side the community, for instance charity events and the like. However apprentice related events are few and far between. In our English counterpart programme, we can see (but cannot attend), the numerous apprentice only events, for networking and for extra training potential.
Yes
I would recommend Fujitsu, as it is a great environment to work in and the work itself is challenging and interesting. However I do believe that Fujitsu can do some improving compared to some other companies that also run the apprentice scheme.
Stay confident and show Fujitsu what you can do during the interviews. Show that you can do the hard work, and are willing and able to travel when required, as some contract require this.
