  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I belong to a team called Enterprise Management within Fujitsu. In my Team of around 20 we are responsible for ensuring our toolsets are working and performing their job. My Job title is a Technical Service Specialist. I use many tools ranging from Microsoft, CA to BMC. I use programs Microsoft’s System, Center Operations Manager and System Center Configuration Manager on a daily basis. My role within the team is to respond to incidents, requests, carry out changes and collaborate with other teams to resolve issues. As I have stated previously I work in a team of around 20 however 7-8 of them work down south. I am constantly communicating with various teams throughout Fujitsu from Wintel in India to UNIX in Ireland. In my role I don't come in to contact with customers and therefore don't have much in the way of external interactions. Project work gets distributed from my line manager that is requested from individuals. This can be from ensuring we add servers into monitoring to setting up reporting for managers to get a picture of stats and figures

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • When I first started Fujitsu in my role, it was like living in another world. I had studied A-level IT but I beg the question of; did i actually learn anything of benefit to me now? I was lost in the Terminology and how the networking side of things worked in such a big company. For the first few months it was all about picking up the basics but from then onwards I was picking more and more up with the help from my team mentoring me and explaining anything i didn’t understand. I feel I have developed many skills while working in my role for example: Written communication Due to the volume of emails sent and received on a daily basis and some to highly important people within Fujitsu it means I have picked up a better structure and also using terminology I wouldn’t have had the slightest clue what some meant when I first started. It has also helped in terms of reading through emails sent by others. Toolset knowledge The Amount of different tools and software we use is astronomical from our timesheets and incident logging software to all the server software. I have also been on two courses relating to the software I use on a daily basis paid for by Fujitsu which had given me a good understanding of how it all works

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I thoroughly enjoy the work I carry out on a daily basis. I don't think I could have picked a better team to work in. Members of the team have been great mentors from day 1, helping me learn a lot about the toolsets we use. This apprenticeship in terms of working and the team I will be in met my expectations however I moved from down south to take this Apprenticeship, and was kind of hoping I would be able to socialise with more people around my age as I didn't know many people. This unfortunately was not the case in my location as there doesn't seem to be very many of the younger generation.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Fujitsu?
  • Fujitsu values it apprentices highly with its programme offering many activities and awards. I am a valued member of the Team having many responsibilities that need to be covered for when I am off work. I have had great gratitude from my line manager which has given me more aspiration to achieve however in my role i don't tend to do project work and it seems to be, working on project work is where you gain recognition. If the same people could see how much BAU work i carried out on a daily basis which is usually behind the scenes and i think would contend with these people gaining these awards.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The induction of the programme was well organised as I got to meet everyone involved in the process along with other apprentices joining the Company at a similar time. The training regarding the programme i think could have a better structure as we were unsure of what we were supposed to be studying from day one. Also it didn't help that the teachers came up from Telford to Manchester meaning that we didn't see them every week like on other apprenticeships. The supports meetings and mentor system has been brilliant. I know exactly where i am within the company.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • As I have stated previously the teachers come up from Telford, so to get support we would either have to email or wait till we next see them. I haven't really needed any support but have had access to the support and guidance when necessary. I think from what I have seen they have been positive in offering support.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • In terms of support from Fujitsu, they are always trying to help for instance in my case their travel scheme whereby they pay the yearly cost of my bus pass and take it out my wage per month which works out cheaper and saves me time buying monthly passes. They have a great HR Team who sort any issues out. I have been mentored by many colleagues in my team who have been so supportive. If I find myself in a situation where i am in need of any help my team are always on hand to offer.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • For an apprenticeship the salary did attract me initially along with working for a big corporate Company however as I have moved from down south, unlike most people my age I share a house so have far more expenses/costs.

    7/10

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • There are always opportunities to raise money in charity events i.e. helping out the local community however there are not usually social company events advertised. There is a work gym but I think there should be for example a company football team or 5 aside that runs which would be good socially but would also increase a healthy lifestyle of many.

    5/10

  • 9. Would you recommend Fujitsu to a friend?
  • No

  • 9b. Why?
  • Good company to work for, offer many perks including offers i.e. cineworld yearly pass discount as an example The reason why in my location many people are a lot older is because they are still working for Fujitsu after many many years.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Fujitsu?
  • Ensure that you do your research, enthusiastic about the role and keen to learn.
