  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I work as an actuarial apprentice with Aon Hewitt. This involves me doing a lot of mathematical calculations to work out pension amounts, and also using excel to run large models. I have the opportunity to speak to senior consultants on a daily basis which allows me to develop my people skills.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes, I have developed my networking skills at Aon as there is always an event to participate in. I have also developed my time management, organisation and how to create opportunities for myself to progress in my career. There's always internal training such as excel, finding your own personal brand, and there's always trips to the London office for larger scale training.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy all aspects of the programme, the internal support provided by my team is great and we are a very social office so it's always fun and there are always great social gatherings. It exceeded my expectations as I thought I would miss out by not going to university but i've gained and made some great friends.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Aon?
  • My manager will always pass me feedback, both positive and constructive and it's so good for personal development. There are awards to be received when you do a good piece of work and you really feel like your efforts have paid off.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • As I was in the first intake of Actuarial Apprentices for AON, it has all been a bit up in the air. No one really knew how to treat me or how I would progress or what exams I would take etc.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • A lot, we are in constant contact and they don't just ask about study but also about my own wellbeing within the office. They go beyond what is necessary to make me feel comfortable.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I have a great manager, he is very supportive and we are more friends than anything. If i ever have a problem I can go straight to him and never feel judged or uncomfortable. It is the same with everyone in the office and all departments.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • I wouldn't say considering I do the exact same work as a new grad, the pay doesn't reflect this. It doesn't give me the chance to move out or do the things I would like to do, so sometimes it can be difficult.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • Yes there are lots of social events such as quiz night, indoor bowls, chocolate tasting etc. We do volunteering in the local community too and we have a massive christmas party at the end of the year!

    10/10

  • 9. Would you recommend Aon to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • It's just a really supportive and stable environment to be working in, I don't regret my decision at all.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Aon?
  • Just be yourself and find out what makes you different and that will attract employers to you.
