1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
My role is to learn the day to day activities of railway technicians. Over the course of my apprenticeship i am required to spend different amounts of time with different departments that operate on the infrastructure, including: Track maintenance, Track signalling, functional supply points.
In the first year we learn the fundamentals of engineering.
2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
Yes I have learnt the basics of engineering although in the first year I haven't learnt much regarding my actually role in yeara to come but it was important to complete the first year to understand the basics of the engineering. Which will set me up fora life in therror industry.
3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
I enjoy the programme very much, living away from home has been a very good experience and it teaches us about team work and moulding as a team. Living with a group of people you haven't met from all around the country is difficult but is a fundamental aspect of the role and is essential to a successful applicant.
4. How valued do you feel by Network Rail?
Very valued our thoughts and opinions on issues are always taken on board by the staff and are dealt with in a good and proper manner that is professional and clear. This was a good aspect as it ensured we were valued from the day we started to the day we left.
5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
The programme is well structured however with staff leaving it left us shorthanded and thus many problems occurred because if this,however next year's cohort will not have this issue as new staff who know the mark criteria will be bought it where as they have not currently.
6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
We received a lot of support from the permanent staff however the temp staff have been less supportive due to a lack of understanding of the procedures of the work place and the fundamentals of the accademy
6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
We received a lot of support from the staff as they have a great understanding of the procedures of the work place and the fundamentals of the accademy which has made my experiences and many others much better, as we begin to learn the company better.
7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
The wage is great it's money in your pocket as your food and accommodation and travel expenses are all paid for you earn your money to keep and spend as you like. Thus the wage packet is great and on top of that we get a lovely completion bonus.
8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
Lots of opportunities with game nightso and train rebuilding at the academy. Lots of chances to work more and become more as well as access to a gym and swimming pool as well as a pool table and quiz nights.

Brilliant experience very much enjoyed it and would highly recommend.
10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Network Rail? *
Team work is essential and a good attitude to work and change. The ability to adapt think on your feet and be a respectable employee is what they are looking for. A level of engineering isn't required I had zero experience yet thrived in the role.
