  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I'm currently in the Typhoon Logistics and project control team. I have the task of assisting a move of PDS kit from Warton site to Samlesbury site. This involved me setting up meetings with the stakeholders who will be involved and sorting out the plan. I have the responsibility to come up with a value stream map of what the move will look like.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Whilst studying the apprenticeship I am studying project management at college along with ECDL which is an excel course. I have also become an ambassador for the company. Along with this I have done an ELLA course which is specifically designed to help with the placement I'm in.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I extremely enjoy the programme that I'm on. Everything is set up really well and I'm learning a lot of things about the business. I have met a lot of people who are willing to help with my learning and this is reassuring. The team I work in are very helpful and want to help me learn which is good for me.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by BAE Systems?
  • I sometimes feel that because I'm an apprentice people are hesitant to give me jobs to do as I don't know the job as well as others. Sometimes this is disheartening but you just have to be trusted once and produce a good piece of work then it'll keep coming and they'll believe in you more.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is really well structured. When we start there is a clear set up of what we'll be doing and when. This is very beneficial because it allows us to plan in advance. The training that we get provided is very good and of high quality. Our assessors are always on hand to meet and they are very useful if we have any queries.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • If needs be the support we can receive is very good and helpful. Our tutor/advisor is very helpful and always wants to help us with our learning which is very beneficial. If we have any problems regarding the programme they always listen and help when needs be. Yes I enjoyed it.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive a lot of support from my mentor if there are any problems with my placement, this is good as it gives me someone to speak to instead of my manager.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • The starting salary isn't the greatest but I personally just look into the future. It will be worth it in the end for sure. I understand that the apprentice wage is low but with the amount of work some of us have to do it's quite harsh. Being based where I am the cost of travelling is a lot and this doesn't leave me with that much at the end.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • Yes! As I said I have become an ambassador for the company and this give me the opportunity to go to schools/road show events etc. to promote the company. There are various sports clubs within the business and this is good to meet new people also.

  • 9. Would you recommend BAE Systems to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • The company is no doubt one of the best in the world for apprenticeships and you are earning whilst learning. It's a great company with great values!

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
  • Research the company know everything about the programme you want to apply for. Regarding the interviews...be calm, it's not a test! The interviewers are wanting to find out stuff about you and see if you will be a good match for the scheme. They are nicer than you expect them to be. If you get on the scheme, take advantage of every opportunity you get given, get your name out and about. It'll benefit you in future roles! Personally I would've liked to have a choice of the function I was in, maybe give 3 to the assessors and them for them to choose for us.
