I am an apprentice mechanical fitter at BAE Systems maritime, on a day to day basis I work with target material (fitting, cleaning and maintaining).
during my apprenticeship I have learnt a lot about nuclear submarines and developed a lot of my skills that I learnt at college. I feel like I have yet to be pushed into learning something completely new in regards of mechanical fitting and not submarine knowledge.
I have had many jobs and had an apprenticeship in the past. excuse the pun but this programme blows any previews working experience out the water, from day one I have really enjoyed learning and having the chance to do what I get to do.
AT bae systems id say I do feel valued, not only by my apprentice coordinator but by my team leader, managers and even by tradesman. everyone has always ensured that everything is okay.
my programme is running smoothly and is built around what I need to know to be qualified, there is a placement schedule in place to ensure that I have enough experience in different areas of the workplace.
I receive as much support as I need/ask for. if I have any problems the have been resolved very quickly and ive also had offers to help wit my dyslexia and been put through further testing to help understand it myself.
as previous but BAE paid for the rather expensive test. BAE value my opinion and have helped me with little problems that I have had while in the business.
I wouldn't say that there is a "cost" in an apprenticeship as everything is covered other than the money it costs me to get to work, but the pay is extremely good and gives me a comfortable, young adult life.
I am on the apprentice council which gives me many opportunities not only in the local area but also nationwide with BAE systems, there is always events going on locally by BAE systems as well that you are able to take part in.
Yes
the apprenticeship is a great learning experience and 99.9% of the time leads to a secure job that pays very well, you make loads of friends and meet a lot of interesting people. if you are local to BAE systems to me its a no brainer.
if you are applying to BAE systems, do your research to the company as a whole before your interview and even before applying, make sure that this is what you want to do and you have no conflicts of ethnical opinion before making weapons of war.
