my role is that of a strcutural designer of nuclear submarines. This includes CAD modelling and producing high spec drawings that go to the shop floor. From these drawings the shop floor can build the submarine. Being a structural designer my roles in the office cover a large part of the submarine such as the outside structure, the frames, seats, outfitting and more.
yes i have learnt new skills. I have learnt how to bassicly operate two different CAD packages. FORAN and CADDS5. As i am only an apprentice these skills are still developing as i carry out knew tasks using the software each week.
I enjoy my programme alot as working with CAD packages is something i find interesting.
i feel like a valued member of each team i visit around the site.
The programme is well organised. We have two sets of bosses, one set look after our college, our NVQ and our pay etc and the other set sort out where we are going to be working in the buisness and our training for CAD packages that we need. i think its very professional and its good for us that there are so many people organising our programme and helping us through our apprenticeship.
i recieve lots of support as there are lots of willing people to support me.
i recieve lots of support from my employer whether its through my capability managers or other fully qualified designers on my squad helping me with a job.
Very well.
BAE systems provide an opportunity to obtain a degree if you have the correct grades when youve completed your 4 years at college. There are also aooportunitys to work with other apprentices coming through on outward bound courses if you wish to do so.
Yes
Because you learn a trade well and it puts you on a steady setting for life, the money you earn allows you to enjoy life more outside of work like travel to different places or drive a nice car.
i would advise others applying to BAE systems to be motivated and enthuastic about what they are applying to do and show this in their interview.
