  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Apprentice Structural Engineer Daily tasks include Drawing work for small and large projects, communicating with colleagues & clients, design work and such. On a daily basis I interact with practically all of my Structures team and others throughout the company. I don't tend to interact daily with clients but external colleagues from other office and such I interact with daily. I am responsible for managing my workloads, managing my time & keeping my parts of projects on track. I work on a variety of Projects from Hospital Structures to Flood Prevention Schemes and everything in between. Mainly I work on Structural and Civil projects however: I have worked with power, mechanical & electrical and all other types of engineering.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy the programme, I have a fantastic team to work in and the atmosphere in the office is great. I have met people who I will be friends with for life and will correspond with from a work point of view for life also. It surpassed my expectations of an Apprenticeship.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Mott MacDonald?
  • I feel that anyone I work with values me greatly and I am hugely involved in a lot of projects and tasks - being a key member of a small Revit team in the office, However; I feel that the value of apprentices is sometimes undermined and we aren't appreciated as much as we should be, this doesn't happen often though.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Very well structured - a plan is laid out practically from day 1 and is followed through Annual reviews and such to always help me improve. CITB also help in organising college and such.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • I feel that they support me a decent amount, I haven't had to really get any support from them due to my company over my time as an apprentice so I couldn't fairly answer this. The reviews CITB give every so often are helpful at times.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • A huge amount of support from my colleagues - everyone is happy to help with any issues or problems I am having and is always there to teach me more.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • Due to the fact that I moved to live alone in Glasgow the salary doesn't really make life comfortable for myself. I feel like a larger salary would help this.

    4/10

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • Outside of the office we have a huge amount of opportunities, various sports groups and clubs, social events from Friday night pub visits to Theatre nights and tours of places. Using Pebbles also offers a lot of discounts on various things like cinema trips and such.

  • 9. Would you recommend Mott MacDonald to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend Motts to a friend as it has a great, friendly but focused working atmosphere in which everyone is willing to help to the best of their abilities and will try help improve you as a person and improve your efficiency & competence at your job role.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Mott MacDonald?
  • To read into the company and its morals/standards and truly look into the aspect of Engineering you are applying for, be confident & friendly during the interview and don't be scared or timid to speak to the interviewer and explain your points. You more than likely will have to complete some type of presentation - do this to the best of your abilities and be ready to counter argument any flaws that are picked out of it and again just research it and really know your stuff. It also wouldn't hurt to revise some maths at Credit/Higher level in Scotland and a touch of physics too. I would like to have been told how relaxed and enjoyable the interview process here really is and maybe if I'd have known that I would have panicked less!
