1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

I am a Pressure control and storage engineer, my daily tasks internally are too complete B-tec assignments and get all of the qualifications needed to be a competent person at my future job role. When on-site my job is to control pressure from offshore sites and regulate the pressure into commercial areas at low pressure.

2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

We have learnt many new skills working for national grid, recently we have completed a Maths B-tec level 3, and several other courses. I also completed a performing engineering operations qualification that included lots of filing and sanding metal objects.

3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I enjoy my apprenticeship very much, i get on with everyone i work with and as i expected the normal apprentice treatment (asked to get a left handed screwdriver etc) i was very surprised when i am treated fairly and everyone is very helpful and understanding.

4. How valued do you feel by National Grid?

As an apprentice i feel a part of the company, our manager always has time to help with any problems and there is a range of good benefits we get including the shares scheme. I have helped with several non-routine operations and have felt like i have actually been an assistance during the operation.

5. How well organised/structured is your programme?

There have not been any problems with how our programme is structured, the induction went smoothly and the training both on-site and off-site is just as well organised. We have a student rep that we can give suggestions to if we feel that there is anything that could be done differently.

6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?

We have several tutors on-site which help a lot with our assignments, the support is relatively easy to acquire as we have all of our tutors email addresses.

7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?

Our salary is exceptional it covers all of my living costs and provides a incentive to work harder, we also get any travel costs and hotel fee's refunded.

8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?

There are loads of voluntary opportunities within your local community that national grid tries to get us to join in with. Some of the guys at work occasionally go out and we come along as well.

10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to National Grid?

Stay calm during your interviews and do your research about the company before applying, it is good to have experience before applying as well so you are ahead of your rivals.
