1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

8/10

My current job title is 'Software Engineer' and I work on the HMRC Aspire contract. My daily tasks consists of working with customer requirements to build and maintain systems that deals with vast amounts of data. This data is then used by HMRC statisticians for their analysis work.

I am responsible for a particular part of the Self assessment system which means there are a number of certain systems that I need to maintain. I have strong communication with my team and I have a good work relationship with the customers.

2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

8/10

I have achieved a level 4 diploma through Capgemini's well delivered higher apprenticeship. Along side the course modules, I have also had the opportunity to learn a large variety or technical and soft skills in my day to day job. I had next to no coding experience before working for Capgemini and a few years down the line, I feel I am able to code confidently using COBOL and DB2. I have also gained a lot of SQL knowledge whilst working here.

Capgemini also provide plenty of training opportunities for people who wish to learn new skills or develop existing ones.

The amount of support that the company and the training providers give us is very impressive and its reassuring to know that if there are any issues they make that their priority to solve it for you.

9/10

In my experience, the program is well structured and organized to suit the person. The coursework modules that are to be completed are discussed and agreed taking into account what the person does in their day to day job.

6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?

10/10

Each group of apprentices are in close contact with a mentor assigned by the apprenticeship providers. It is their job to make sure that any issues are solved and that the program continues to remain organized and well structured. It is very helpful to have that kind of support when on the apprenticeship.

6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?

10/10

My employer gives a lot of support when it comes to the apprenticeship. The company allows a certain amount of time each month for you to work on modules and my colleagues around me are always happy to help out.

7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?

9/10

For an apprenticeship, the salary is one of the most generous around. I drive to work everyday and I feel my salary helps make that very much affordable. One of the best things about this apprenticeship is the progression. The fact that you can promote and progress whilst still on the apprentice is extremely motivational.

8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?

8/10

There are occasional activities that happen outside of work. There are sports and social clubs that staff can join and there are often a lot of charity events that people can attend. There is a company Christmas party every year which is always fun.
