  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am an apprentice lab technician, I help out others with experiments and setting up equipment. On a day to day basis I will be assisting others with their tasks and keeping the labs in a working and safe environment.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt coding and developed skills in how to look at and read C++ and python. I have learnt how to operate and maintain a scanning electron microscope, 3d printers and more general lab equipment. The programme has helped me develop additional skills in how to interact with different people as well all of which will be valuable.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I greatly enjoy the day to day working, there are lots of new experiences and finding ways to approach these is interesting and keeps you thinking. The apprenticeship programme has been challenging but the experiences have been valuable.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Hewlett Packard Enterprise?
  • I feel Hewlett Packard Enterprise has been very welcoming and put interest in making me and other people starting out feel included. There are lots of opportunities to find out more about what the company, the organisation and the team are all doing.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme has not had others going through the scheme before and as such there have been some issues with the coursework not being aligned with the work as much as it would be good to. Additionally the training provider has issued a new contact part of the way through the course which has caused some additional strain as the differences between what the two wanted from the units came through. Having said that the contact and Hewlett Packard Enterprise are both doing their best to provide a good qualification and experience.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • Until recently the contact provided minimal feedback or guidance on the units, since we have had a change in contacts we have been getting more feedback and it has been actionable and useful. If we had had the current contact for the duration of the apprenticeship I would have an experience in line with how I feel the work aspect is going.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • The company is doing fantastically to help with what I am trying to achieve. I feel that I am able to ask for help at any stage and receive usable guidance on what to be doing.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • As someone that is living away from home there are additional costs that come with generally living. The first year was difficult to get through with the salary given however it has been much easier after that. Having said that I have managed to save a reasonable amount from the apprenticeship and expect to be able to put down a deposit for a mortgage by the end of the scheme if I would like to. This has been without spending life as you would expect from a student however.

    6/10

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • There are opportunities provided by Hewlett Packard Enterprise outside of work such as free gym membership and discounts at a variety of places. There are local facilities that give plenty of opportunities outside of work in the area.

  • 9. Would you recommend Hewlett Packard Enterprise to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • It has been a great place to work and I have enjoyed it greatly. It is working at the leading edge of what is possible and in a changing and exciting environment.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Hewlett Packard Enterprise?
  • Look at how the split went. If you are already living in the area I would highly recommend the work and if you would need to move consider how you would be able to live nearby with the associated costs.
