Control and instrumentation maintenance apprentice Review

I'm a 3rd year maintenance technician apprentice. This means that everyday I'm expected to further expand my knowledge of my trade and develop my practical skills on the job and in the workshop wherever possible. When it comes to jobs on site, I myself carry them out under the supervision of qualified technicians as much as possible.

I've learne various new skills when it comes to the practical side of things. From a base knowledge of virtually zero, I've built up a fair knowledge of my trade and the theory behind how instruments work. My practical skills are not where I would like them to be, but I believe this is more down to it not being particularly natural to me, rather than a fault with the apprenticeship.

It has peaks and troughs. I can feel very satisfied with my job after a good day or a day where I feel I've contributed well or learnt a lot. However, I don't feel I'm a natural fit with the job. Again, this is not particularly a fault of the programme.

I feel very much valued by EDF Energy. My line managers, though tough, are always open to meetings and conversations if I deem them necessary and are always looking at ways they can help. However, I do feel that the company are looking for a certain type of apprentice and don't always understand people's various types of personality. For example, I'm a very quiet and shy person, and this is seen as negative and lacking motivation. On the whole however, i do indeed feel valued.

It is very much organised and structured very well. The path of the apprenticeship is made very clear early on, as well as the steps that need to be taken to achieve success.

I receive all the support I need. Progress meetings are encouraged and regularly done, and support is always offered. I do feel however that more could be done to understand different personality types, rather than trying to mould everybody into the same character.

I feel this is more down to the individual than the employer. I feel my salary is highly competitive and rewards the hard work I put in and allows me to enjoy life outside of work.

I have plenty of time outside of work to pursue activities, such as sport and language learning. For things like charity fundraising and the like, the company are often very supportive and good at helping, in my opinion.

For certain characters and individuals, the environment EDF has nurtured is fantastic to work in. The employee benefits such as the pension scheme are also really good.

Be honest and natural. Enthusiasm is valued above all else, as well as simply being friendly and polite. Don't be afraid to make mistakes.
