  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I work alongside the UK Computer Service team. This group provide IT infrastructure services to all end users in 3M UK: this ranges from provisioning PCs, phones, & the data network; to resolving day to day incidents with the help of other global teams and 3rd parties

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have developed a wide range of existing computer skills. Along with gaining new skills from the training provided by my apprenticeship.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy my apprenticeship a lot, I moved into this field of work about 7 months ago, when I decided that my previous job (plumber) was not right for me. Since I have moved to 3m, my life has changed and I can finally see my future looking up.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by 3M UK?
  • I feel pretty valued in my apprenticeship, I have my own responsibilities and people rely on me to get jobs done. This gives me a sense of self-worth, knowing that when I wake up in the morning I'm probably going to lighten up someone's day by solving one of their problems.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My programme is pretty well organised - I have set responsibilities and projects. I also have regular meetings with my manager to discuss my progress or anything work related. My apprenticeship provider also have regular meetings with me, ensuring everything is going smoothly with my work placement and coursework.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • I receive enough support from my apprenticeship provider, I speak with my assessor regularly to discuss coursework and upcoming training. Any questions I have I ask my assessor, and he usually replies pretty promptly.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive plenty of support from my employer, any jobs or tasks that I have that I may struggle with, I ask my manager and he always points me in the right direction.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • Not very well, when offered the apprenticeship I knew I would be taking a significant pay cut from my previous job, however I didn't quite realise how much it would affect me until my first pay check. though, this is only my first year, and I am expecting a significant pay rise at the end of my level 3 apprenticeship.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • I believe 3m operate sport teams, however I have not had a great look into this yet - but I do plan on. I do however have a gym membership - which is located on site.

  • 9. Would you recommend 3M UK to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • It is an extremely reputable company - once you get your foot in the door - I'm sure opportunities open up when you work hard.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to 3M UK?
  • Do your homework before you come to the interview - we're such a large company with so much history.
