  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • This typically involved participating in sessions and group exercises. Presentations from trainees, associates and partners also allowed us to gain a greater insight into the work of corporate solicitors. Work shadowing was also a component of the work experience.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have developed teamwork skills as we worked on a group project. In addition to this; leadership, communication and listening skills were also developed through the sessions and interactions with fellow students and employees of the firm.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoyed the programme very much as there was a good team environment in which all participants got along well. This was also notable given the fact that the majority of the programme consisted of sessions designed to improve our understanding of the work that lawyers do.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Hogan Lovells?
  • I felt that there was a great deal of support and guidance from employees of the firm. I felt valued by our coordinator and by fellow members of the work experience programme. Employees were also willing to answer any questions and queries I had.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme had a clear structure and was very well organised. The first session consisted of an introduction to what the firm did and what we would be involved in throughout the week. This allowed me to have a clear idea of what would be happening and enabled me to plan more effectively.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • There was a great deal of support from our training provider. The coordinator was very friendly and was always willing to help with any problems. This was one of the key reasons why the programme was so successful.

  • I was not an employee but members of the firm offered a great deal of support. They were always willing to answer any questions and were very approachable.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • There was not a salary offered but travel expenses were covered which was very helpful as it allowed me to commute to and from the firm with ease. This was useful.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • The employees I spoke to were very clear that the hours at the firm meant that their lives predominantly revolved around their work. Despite this they all mentioned that it was possible to achieve a good work-life balance provided you were efficient and organised.

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • The work experience programme allowed me to gain a very clear understanding of what it was to be a corporate solicitor. It also helped me to clear up any misconceptions and provided me with a clear focus and goal. The environment was also surprisingly friendly with a team culture being at the forefront of work.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Hogan Lovells?
  • Create a CV that is specific to yourself and clearly highlight the skills you have gained through participating in extra-curricular activities as well as how they are relevant.
