  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • To review parts, tooling, fixtures, assemblies and measurement data in order to make sure a future vehicle is build to the highest dimensional standards consistently. This involves talking to part suppliers and tooling suppliers whilst getting to travel around the UK and the World in order to accommodate this work.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt many new skills whilst working for the company. This ranges from the academic side where i have been put through a degree following a manufacturing pathway, all the way to the business skills learnt through day to day working. Personal sills are also something that has been developed, especially with confidence.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The programme has been really good and the opportunities are amazing. The work side of the programme is the best where you are treated no differently to every other worker or graduate. You still get all the same opportunities as everyone else and also the same recognition. The academic learning side could use improvement.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by JLR?
  • I feel really valued by Jaguar Land Rover as a whole as they understand that i also have commitments to the learning side of things. My managers have always understood this and supported me with whatever i need in order to complete the apprenticeship to the best of my ability.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is constantly changing so it can be very difficult to know where i stand outside of Jaguar Land Rover. When difficulties and problems arise with the apprenticeship side of things and also the academic side, it is usually very challenging to escalate the problem so instead i have to go through the company instead.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • The support i receive from my training provider is outlined in handbooks and told to us that it is always available however if there are ever any concerns they are usually just listened to and then nothing is done about them. It is then best to go to the employer for the required support.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive all the support that is physically possible. This can range from projects to tasks and even to time. I have never been made to feel like i am asking too much or that i am becoming a burden as the support is always given freely and also encouraged.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • The salary/package meets and goes beyond the costs. The monthly wage increases once per 6 months as long as you are on track to reach a healthy circa £40k around the time of completion (for the degree programme). The degree and other training is funded by the employer as well as the usual expenses.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • The employer gives you all of the opportunities that are given to normal every day employees. This can include skill learning, experiences, helping the community and team building. As long as the opportunities help you develop as an individual or as a worker then Jaguar Land Rover will support it.

  • 9. Would you recommend JLR to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • The learning and development are over and above what is given from just going to university to get a degree. You get all of this whilst being paid and getting extremely valuable experience. The jobs are interesting and exciting and then the opportunities and future benefits are exceptionally good once completed.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to JLR?
  • Be patient and do your best. They are not necessarily looking for the candidates with the best grades but people who think in certain ways. By finding these people they can always train and educate them to get them to that academic level. I would have liked to have been told the job places available on the apprenticeship.
