My role in the apprenticeship is to become a fully qualified engineer and specialise in body cad engineering. On a day to day basis i attend college which is a mixture of practical workshops and higher education lessons.
I have learnt lots of new practical skills. Coming from an A-Level background which is all classroom based and now being in a workshop 2 days a week i have learnt many new skills such as CNC, Milling and how to strip and rebuild an engine.
My programme is very enjoyable, you obviously have good and bad days just like at school but the good days strongly outweigh the bad. the work load is also very good there is enough to push yourself but there is also enough time left over to get to know your new colleagues.
I think we all feel that we are very much appreciated by JLR and that they genuinely want and need us and believe that we are the future of the business. Our managers in the Body CAD department are very supportive and enthusiastic about our futures.
There were a few teething problems at the beginning with college but they were resolved and we now have current apprentices working on a pack to help the new apprentices coming in September so the issues aren't repeated.
We can receive as much or as little support that we want outside of regular lessons. All managers and teachers at the college are willing to take their own time to support us. We all get a personal tutor too who we can always speak to.
Our employers always love to hear from us and see how we are getting on at college. They are 100% on our side and nobody wants us to fail, everybody is in it together.
We receive and amazing salary for an apprenticeship, we earn the same as people who work and we receive pay rises every 6 months. We will all be finishing on around 40k a year.
JLR provide an educated learning scheme where they will pay for you to learn something new outside of college. An example of this could be driving lessons or learning to ski.
Yes
It is a very inviting company to work for and care about all of their employees. Being part of JLR I feel like I am in a very exciting position and on the brink of a new era of motor vehicle engineering. We also get paid such good money especially as most of us are still under 20.
Definitely apply its so worth it, even if you don't think you will get it there is no harm in trying. If you have the ability and show enthusiasm and motivation you have an amazing chance. Also if you make it to the assessment centre don't be scared everyone's lovely and aren't out to trick you just come prepared. If I could give myself advice id tell myself to be confident in my ability.
