Mechanical Technician Apprentice Review

As the mechanical apprentice on-site, my daily tasks involves carrying out maintenance on various pieces of equipment, as well repairing defects. I liaise with my maintenance supervisor to arrange when works are to be carried out, as well as down-time.

On completion of my apprenticeship, I will receive a SVQ L3 in mechanical maintenance which I have been progressing through for the last 3-4 years. I have also been sent on many courses throughout my time, relevant to mechanics, as well as site based.

I have enjoyed the work throughout my programe, as I have always wanted to be involved in oil and gas, and by working on the OPA network this has given me the opportunity to do so. I have worked in different environments which again varies the work and makes is more interesting and enjoyable.

Throughout my time with Costain, I have regular been visited by my college tutor, who check my work and points out any mistakes. My manager also often comments how well done my college reports are. When a big job is being carried out on other sites, I am often given the opportunity to get involved which i feel is invaluable.

My first year of work was purely at college, which prepared me for the sort of work to be carried out when I go on-site. I have been sent on any training courses which have varied from valve maintenance, to first aid at work. My college has provided my with lots of notes to assist with my work.

As stated previously, my tutor often visits to see how i'm getting on, and also to point me in the right direction. I also feel as though I can contact him whenever i need help with something.

Throughout my apprenticeship, I have received good support from various people within the company as well as the mentor i have had. There has been gaps where my mentor's have come and go meaning there was not one here, but this was overcome by having the opportunity to visit other sites.

Throughtout my time, I have received a pay rise every 6 months which i feel is very fair. I feel as though as a apprenticeship, my wage is very good and provides me with a good living, as well as social life.

As previously stated, i have been sent on many training courses throughout my time which helped me learn and develop new skills. In the past, I also had the opportunity to attend apprenticeship gatherings which helped me develop team building skills, as well as meet other apprentices.
