  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am currently doing an apprenticeship to be a network engineer with Virgin media, this involves working with other team members to develop skills and knowledge. My responsibilities are to listen, learn and work towards developing myself to be the best I can at this job. The jobs I am involved in are mainly to do with clearing P4 noise tickets or network maintenance.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • So far I think I have learnt a lot of new information and skills that will help my development in this job. I have also completed courses in erecting ladders and lifting pits. I am also scheduled to complete a G39 course next month which will only develop me more. I also think I have developed professional skills in how I should work coinciding with the general public. So far I have also learnt a lot about the network I am working on. I still have a lot to learn though.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I would say it is very well organised. There is a clear system of how things work in the team with the manager and PE (principal engineer). Although I don't fully understand how all these procedures work yet, I am fully aware they are in place and every other team member appears to be very comfortable with how they work.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • I have received a lot of support so far from my trainers, they are very helpful and approachable. If I ever have any questions or problems, I feel like I can get in touch with them no matter how simple or silly the question may seem. This is down to good people skills on their behalf, they make me feel comfortable. They also have very good ways of delivering training techniques.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Lots, Virgin Media and all of the staff have been extremely helpful so far. This also includes employees from outside my department, they have all been keen to help giving me an insight to the company and the way things work here. My manager has always made effort to show his openness to help me also. I have appreciated this massively so far.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • Very well. I am only on an apprentice wage at the moment obviously so as I progress through my apprenticeship I will start earning more, but at the moment I get by just fine. Having a company van helps with this a lot too because it allows me to save money on driving my own car around all day. As I develop through my apprenticeship into full qualifications I will become a lot more comfortable though.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • I don't completely understand the relationship this question has towards the job. There are not too many things outside work that connect directly to work though I do not think. The jobs great working hours do give me a lot of time to myself at nights and weekends though this is a great feature. I do really enjoy the shifts now I am used to working them.
