E&L Apprentice Review

My role is as a electrical and instrumentation technician which requires me to mainly conduct maintenance checks as well as fault finding on assets in my compressor station and if the need arises at other compressor stations as well. When in the workplace I am required to adhere to strict codes of practice which govern my safety as well as those around me,

During my progression through the apprenticeship scheme i have developed skills especially in the electrical side, that allowed me to understand and rectify faults in the household.

I have continued to enjoy my apprenticeship as the work is always interesting and challenging. You are apart of a close nit site team which reinforces National Grid's philosophy of working as a 'one team'. I believe this programme has met my expectations as well as surpassed them in some areas. Overall i have enjoyed it and will continue to do so.

Support from course instructors are widely available if in need. This can be received by email if not in person. Instructors are always willing to support you and frequently aim to make things as clear as possible.

The salary package offered by national grid is generous considering travel and accommodation costs associated with training are able to be claimed back through the company. Also there is London weighting available for those working in sites based in London which allows you initial income to be supplemented by an according amount to maintain standard living costs in London. This allows you to work and train with an income that will keep you content.

Career prospects

If someone were to apply to join National Grid, i would advise that adequate research be done on the company before hand. Also during the assessment days i would recommend to keep calm and ask any questions to help make clear what's required of you. In the interviews stage if there are any questions which require time to think about you can ask to come back to that question later on which will save you any awkward silences. Overall the task of making it through the different stages is well worth the opportunities that you acquire along with the valuable skills.
