My job title is Civil Engineering technician. My daily tasks vary from day to day. A few of my tasks are as follows; Assisting with initial site surveys, creating engineering deign plans and drawing up timescales for the delivery of supplies, equipment and labour. I am currently working on the A6MARR project in Stockport.
I have learnt many new skills since starting my role as a Civil Engineering Technician. I learnt how to set out, use the GPS, understand how to calculate rebar and the basics of civil engineering. I have also been on a few training courses such as close proximity etc.
When I first started my role on thee project I didn't really enjoy the role due to how unorganised the job was when first started. As the job progressed the job got much more enjoyable as I started to feel like I worked for a team.
I feel like I am a valued member of the A6MARR project. At frist I didn't feel very valued as I wasn't really part of any part of the project and there was a lot of sitting around for me, but ever since I am a certain part of the project I feel more valued.
The apprenticeship programme at first was very unorganised. This was for both college and workplace. But this was soon sorted and a structured routine was put into place with structured college and workplace routine.
The training provider offer satisfactory support I believe. Once again this was unorganised as we had several different tutors. The routine for college wasn't organised until as stated above we had a structured routine.
I believe the support from my employer has been satisfactory also. The employer show us support in our college days and in any training courses or exercises that we may need to get through the apprenticeship programme.
I believe my salary is also satisfactory. only thing I would change if I could change would be to have more travel expenses if I had the chance. I receive travel expenses but its only half of what I actually spend on fuel. SOme of the other apprentices get more expenses but few miles away from me.
There have been several opportunities outside of work to get onto on the apprenticeship programme. There has been numerous training courses and events that we have been able to attend. In a few months me and a fellow apprentice are attending a school to talk about our role on the job etc.
Yes
I would recommend this job toa friend. This job has really got so much to offer and so many different opportunities to grab to the right minded individual. You meet so many new people and see things that ony people in this sector would see.
TIps I would give to others is to just be yourself. Be honest on the application for and show your confident on the assessment day. Try and stand out at the assessment day but not too much where it is noticeable by the assessor.
