  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am a Learning & Development Assistant. I manage our internal courses, eLearning, maternity coaching, our talent system etc. In my role Schroders employees are our clients so I'm constantly speaking to people in the business. I'm involved in several projects, I have two programmes launching in March, I'm involved in our internal systems upgrade project as well as a HR project to improve our HR processes.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes, throughout the programme we received soft skills training. We also worked towards our Claritas qualification which is industry specific and internationally recognised. I've learnt a lot of people skills during my time here, how to communicate effectively with different people is a very important skill.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoyed my programme. The company are very supportive and my team got me involved in lots of different work, exposing me to the business as much as possible.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Schroders?
  • Highly valued. I was made permanent after only 9 months and almost all of my year were offered permanent roles and the end of our programme. I was involved in projects with senior members of the business pretty early on and I was given one of these to manage myself just 4 months into the programme.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is constantly improving. My year had at least one soft skills training a month for the first 5 months as well as two induction days to start the programme. They also organised two revision days for us before our exams, they brought a trainer in for the two days. They now also receive 'Lunch & Learns' where they learn about what different employees do across the business.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • I'm assuming this means our programme manager. We had full support, she always made time for us and made sure that we felt a part of the business.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • The school leaver programme is fully supported by the business, I think this is shown by the number of us that are made permanent employees. Each year have to complete a charity project and the business gets fully involved with whatever the trainees need.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • Salary is good enough, definitely for a first role. I moved from Nottingham to London and managed just fine, paying rent, bills, oyster and still had plenty of money for socialising, gym membership, sports etc.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • I'm not sure what this question means. The Schroders programme is part of a bigger industry wide scheme so we have networking events with school leavers from other Investment Management companies.

  • 9. Would you recommend Schroders to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Because it's a really friendly and supportive environment. I never felt like I couldn't ask a question, there's always someone there to help and there are so many development opportunities.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Schroders?
  • They know that this will probably be your first proper job so they don't expect you to know everything about the company or the details of what we do. They're looking for the passion and eagerness to learn, they're looking for potential, someone who wants to be there, someone who appreciates what a massive opportunity this is for them to start a serious career.
