  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am an electrical/mechanical technician working in the SE&HL team at 3M. The SE&HL team work very closely together and are always happy to lend a and to anyone who needs it. My day-to-day job involves maintaining our lab to ensure we have all the correct equipment that is required for the jobs at hand. Most of this lab maintenance is revolved around the 3D printer in the lab. I spend the majority of my time designing and creating new designs for prototypes/patents. Due to the design work I get to work closely with a lot of other labs that require new designs drawn up.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • When I finish the apprenticeship I will have a level 3 diploma and a extended level 3 NVQ. I have developed my Maths and Electronic understanding loads with the help from the college. From 3M I have learnt how to use lots of different software, i have also developed my public speaking skill due to having meetings, and my time planning skills have become much better.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I couldn't have hoped for a better apprenticeship! Both the team and the company I work for are very friendly and are always there with support if needed. 3M is constantly trying to push people to expand there networks and to meet new people; I Believe this is a very good attitude to have as not only will it help in the future if you need help with anything, but it also allows people to see other ways of working and see what else 3M has to offer. The work keeps me busy but is always fun to do and is very informative.

  • I feel very valued from 3M, I have monthly meeting with my team and bi weekly meeting with my manager/mentor, in both these meetings we speak about recognizing the good things that people have done. • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • As soon as I started my apprenticeship 3m was ready with all the equipment I needed, I had my induction on my first day and then had introductions with all of the people that were my main support if I needed anything. I was also given a time slot on Friday to help me with my college work if I needed it. The college had a couple of problems getting me registered with the NVQ rewarding body but this did not affect me going to college and doing all the work that was required of me.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • So far I haven't needed any support from my training provider. My tutor has given me his email and work mobile though if I ever did need anything, he is a very good teacher so I do not have trouble with learning

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • The support I receive from 3M is amazing! As I work in a team if I ever have a problem there are multiple people I can go too, When I get started on a project I always get given a detailed description of what is expected. If I need help doing something they will help guide the process to make it a lot easier.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • The salary that I receive is very fair, it manages to cover my cost of living, all my travel expenses and all the little things that I need. 3M pay me back for all my travel expenses so I don't end up paying much towards getting to and from College/Work

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • 3M like to put on quite a lot of events to get people motivated, they also try to get you to speak to as many people as possible, all the Apprentices in the Bracknell site have a Skype group where events such as nights out are planned. I am urged to travel to the other UK 3M sites to see how over factories work.
