Trainee Planner Review

I am a construction planner. This involves producing a schedule for all activities required to complete the construction project. In order to do this accurately it involves communicating to all members of the team as well as using my own knowledge and experience.

I have learnt how to use the current scheduling software as well as learning how to use new emerging software which exposes me to very modern technology. I am always developing my skills through my day to day tasks.

I have an advantage over other apprentices doing the same course as me because my company is so large it can cater to all my development needs and lets me explore different areas of the industry. It is always exciting to see a different project or to experience working in a different department, even if I do not enjoy it I appreciate and enjoy my usual role more.

I have been assigned a mentor, a buddy, an apprenticeship manager, a line manager and a project manager. I feel this many people being interested in my development is a statement of how valued I am at Laing O'Rourke. There is always someone to help you out and point you in the right direction when things get tough or praise you when you deserve it.

There is a clear game plan in place at the start of the programme with review periods at set intervals. The only criticism I would have is that the programme was cut, reducing the number of modules, without any consultation which I think is unfair and not what was agreed prior to starting.

My university is very diligent in adhering to feedback and has done so on many occasions. Very supportive.

There is always somebody to help with any problems I come across whether it is work, university or a general query.

The programme is designed for school leavers and it seems everybody starts on the same wage. It should be considered that the people on the programme who are not school leavers still living at home and that they may need a little more pay to help them along.

I believe the are opportunities outside of work but I have not attended any.
