  • Job title is Mechanical and Electrical Technician. The role and day to day tasks involve a lot of shadowing and observing the senior members, but also has opportunities for hands on experiences and taking reasonability for tasks.

  • A wide range of training is available to who ever wants it. I have taken part in multiple health and safety training and also had the opportunity to be given Digital engineering training.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The company aims to be the best so work and workers are dedicated and willing to teach. The team is very friendly and very supportive of each other.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Laing O'Rourke?
  • Internal progression through the company is very open and you're good enough then you will be given the recognition. Management is very appreciative and treats employees regularly.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Training days are set out at the start of the year so everyone can planned them accordingly. The education side of things is well managed and the support is there when ever you need it.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • Management is always open to talk to the employees about any problems they might be having. Also they will always provide support if you feel you are not in the right position.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • HR deal with any problem you might be having very quickly and efficiently. Mentors and management are very supportive in giving you advise and help.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • Travel costs are completely covered by the company, as well as the education costs. So when you put all those together with the base salary, then it is really good for the position that I am in right now.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • Local community involvement is high. Although I do feel that the company could do more to promote company sports teams and team building days on projects.

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • Great employer for support and personal growth. The paid education alongside work experience is a much better option than stand alone education which could end up costing around £54,000 to the individual.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Laing O'Rourke?
  • If you are a motivated individual who wants to work hard, then all you have to do is be yourself. If you try and lie you could end up in a position/job in which you don't enjoy.
