  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am a software developer apprentice. As part of a team we build software products for Sky and we tackle software problems which may appear. Daily meet with our scrum master who is our team motivator which we tell them what we did the day before and what we are going to do on that day.I am responsible for the security of our code and that it meets a certain standard.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt how to work in a self managing team. This is a team which is able to achieve goals without a manager involved. Furthermore, I have learnt the fundamentals of a programming language called Java.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy the programme. Sky have great staff, plenty of exciting work and amazing facilities. My team are great programmers and provide lots of support. It exceeds all my expectations and Sky is an amazing company.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Sky?
  • I feel valued by my team and by the company. There is plenty of internal recognition and they constantly want the apprentices to be involved in project days and open days at schools.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The course starts with the organisation of the year. This is to make sure you understand what will be coming and what you need to do to achieve expectations. There is support from everyone in the company and plenty of work is given for me to do.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • QA have a wide range of amazing tutors. All tutors are very knowledgeable and provide apprentices with a lot of support. I enjoy our training lessons with QA because a lot of time and effort is put in from them and Sky.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • We receive plenty of support from our employer, HR team and our department. Our employer has weekly meetings with us to make sure we are doing well in our department. HR team have been supporting us from the beginning and helped us to be comfortable in Sky.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • Salary is great for an apprentice. It is enough to cover all the costs for an apprentice.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • There are many company events which apprentices are encouraged to go on. There are plenty of company activities which employers can get involved in. When I'm not working I go to the sky gym which is full of personal trainers who help you out.

  • 9. Would you recommend Sky to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • Sky provides a lot of support for the apprentice in the form of facilities, equipment, level of education and salary. It is an ideal place to do your apprenticeship and I would strongly recommend for teenagers to apply.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Sky?
  • Read about Sky behaviours because it can help you with your application and the Sky employer will know you did your research.
