  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • During my internship I worked on markets in fixed income. I analysed how trades on gilts took place and was able to use financial data tools such as Bloomberg to find relevant information. I also got the opportunity to speak to different employees within markets so this widened my knowledge of the financial markets, i.e. understanding swaps and derivatives. Furthermore, I was able to do some research into CISI regulatory exams, on such things as money laundering and market abuse.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have improved my researching skills by looking into acts such as the FSMA 2000 and the Data Protection Act 1993. I have developed my knowledge of using websites such as bloomberg DMO etc. I also believe I have developed my communication and team working skills by attending a workshop on networking, and getting involved in a group activity. My time management skills have also improved as I as able to take notes from a 136 page revision book over 5 days.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • This programme was thoroughly enjoyable, and this was mainly due to the friendliness of the JP Morgan employees and their willingness to help you improve as a person. This was doable through asking lots of questions and getting to meet various employees working within different areas of the bank. Also, the fact it was a returners programme enable me to reignite relationships with JP morgan employees I met last year, and of course meeting students again from the previous year was great fun! Moreover, the trip to the LME was brilliant, as it gave us an understanding of what the LME is and how it operates, and watching the ring was enthralling!

  • 4. How valued do you feel by J.P. Morgan?
  • J.P. Morgan employees made you feel like you were a part of the team, and this was due to the fact that they treated me as an employee and let me get involved in the work. They also answered any queries I had and they let me further expand my knowledge of the financial sector by giving me the opportunity to sit within different areas of the bank, i.e mid-market. J.P. Morgan also gave a security and compliance talk and this made me feel valued as the rules J.P. Morgan employees had to follow was exactly the same for us, so this instantly gave me a sense of responsibility.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The J.P Morgan returners programme was well organised as our working hours were clear and flexible, depending on what time your mentor wanted you to be in for. The work I was set was very clear and so I always had something to do which is very important. The fact we had the freedom to do what we wanted at night was highly beneficial, because some nights when we had had a particularly long day we were able to just go to sleep, instead of being forced out to go somewhere. Yet if we did feel like going out we were able to, so this flexibility was highly beneficial. The only downside is that in markets, the traders have quite little spare time, so it is useful if you are given a project to complete, because otherwise you could just be sat watching your mentor, rather than actually doing something beneficial.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • The SMF gave me the opportunity to return to J.P. Morgan and this motivates me to continue working hard and never give up. They are very supportive as they answer any question you have on education for example. Without the support of the SMF, I wouldn't have been able to complete two internships at JP Morgan

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • The employees at J.P. Morgan are extremely supportive as they answer any question that you may have, and go beyond just answering the question. For example, I asked my mentor about compliance and he was able to get me a meeting with one of the employees within compliance. They also make sure you are not just watching and actually are absorbing the information they tell you, by doing a quiz or presentation etc. This allows for continuous improvement.
