Engineering apprentice Review

My role as an apprentice thus far has simply been to learn basic and intermediate engineering skills at the London Underground Training centre, however moving into my second year now I will be involved in learning on the job with the power distribution dept of the company.

I have developed many new skills and reinforced some that I already had through my attendance at the training centre, it has given me the necessary skills and base knowledge to go into the my second year with confidence.

I enjoy the apprenticeship immensely, it is always a challenge and feels rewarding when you are learning new skills that are practical and that you know you will use in your day to day role in the future.

Transport for London make it very clear from the outset of employment that we as apprentices are the future of the company and thus they will spend a lot of time, energy and recourses to make sure we get the best possible opportunities within the company.

The structure of the training at the training centre is the one thing I can say could do with improvement, as different trainers have different ways of expecting the portfolio to be collated, by making the programme as uniformed as possible it would increase the efficiency of the learning experience.

In my case the training provider and employer are one and the same and the support you get from them is very good, weather it be work or personal related issues there is always someone to seek guidance and help from.

The salary is simply one the best in the country for apprentices, along with the many benefits that come with with working for TFL.

It is one of the most varied and diverse companies not only in the UK but the world. With roles not only in many different engineering sectors but also office based apprenticeships such as project management, HR, finance ect, giving a wide scope to those who might be interested in a role within TFL

Look in to not just one or two roles but all the roles available as TFL has a lot of opportunities as at first when I was applying I was looking a project management apprenticeships and then found the power distribution apprenceship instead and given my college background in electrical engineering chose that instead.
