  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • As a Signalling Design Engineer the main bulk of work is completing Red Ink Designs. This entails modifying current signalling bookwirings which can include circuitry, cable schematics, equipment layouts and schedules. Projects are set out by the Team Lead and that is who updates on the job are reported to.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • BTEC Level 3 in Electrical & Electronics Engineering. Also, internal training courses such as Signalling courses, which provides all the necessary information to complete the job. I have passed all five of those courses.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy all aspects of my programme: my apprentice year group, collegues in the Design Office, type and extent of work, and the location of work.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Transport for London?
  • On the basis of being given a lot of responsibilities and independence on projects within the office, I feel as though what I was doing was valued and much appreciated.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I believe it to be well structured. When starting, we went through an induction which included all health and safety information. Then the first year was day release at college along with NVQ Level 2 tasks in the Engineering Workshop. Year 2 continued with day release at college to complete Level 3, along with placements around the business meeting NVQ Level 3 requirements. Year 3 was signalling courses and placement in our designated field which allowed us to complte the NVQ Level 3 and gain a greater understanding of work upon completion of the programme.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • Throughout the whole apprenticeship I feel as though I have received sufficient support with regards to my Training Provider. Guidance with any problems was dealt with efficiently.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • The apprentice controllers have contributed a lot of supoort throughout the apprenticeship. Also, my mentor has given me unlimited time and commitment when it has come to my learning and progression.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • Pre-paid travel pass on the underground is very beneficial for keeping travel costs down. Also, salary allows me to live within my means however enough to cover daily and social costs comfortably.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • Company Events are held out of the office, as well as the Institute of Railway Signalling Engineers (IRSE) events providing you join as a member.

  • 9. Would you recommend Transport for London to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • The work and training is challenging yet rewarding. The apprentice sheme is extremely well run and support & guidance is never too much to ask. Also, working in the city and travelling on the tube is a real attraction, as London life really is the best.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Transport for London?
  • Ensure detailed and relevant answers are given on the application form. Foe everything else, Preparation is key! Ensure you are prepared for assessment days by completing practice questions sent out; and make sure you prepare well for your interview.
