  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I’m an electrical engineer apprentice at London Underground Ltd. Working under part of the Asset performance power (AP Power) department within London Underground. AP Power and their engineers are responsible for the electrical power and distribution that supports the London Undergrounds vast rail network. Providing electrical power to the London Undergrounds DC track sections, Signalling and Station services. At AP Power there are several sections operating to keep the power and distribution service up and running for London Underground. As an apprentice throughout my training I will experience each section aiding the engineers with the daily operations of keeping the power system up and running for the commuters of London. The departments within AP Power that I will gain knowledge and experience in are; Plant and feeder protection, SCADA(supervisory control and data acquisition), Plant maintenance, HV Cables, Isolation of HV and LV plant and equipment, electrical installation and property maintenance, power station familiarization and operations at Greenwich power station, control room operations and lastly breakdown and repair of plant and switch gear. As an apprentice I am require to produce weekly logbooks to improve my knowledge and understanding of the electrical power network and daily operations that take place in AP power sections.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I attended London Undergrounds apprentice training school where I gained knowledge of valuable skills such as; electrical installation, circuitry fault finding, electronic circuits, bench fitting and mechanical maintenance. Each section had a project attached to it which the apprentices would carry out the jobs and then provide a log book write up after each job task.

  • I enjoy going to work and learning new skills and developing my knowledge and overall growth as an apprentice.

  • I feel extremely valued and supported by transport for London

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The overall apprenticeship is very well structured and guidance is provided through everystep of the way to allow apprentices to succeed.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • The training department supports the apprentice throughout every aspect of the apprenticeship, including college, university and on the job learning. They monitor our progress and deal with any struggles or queries we have throughout the scheme.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive support and guidance from Tfl throughout my apprenticeship, the training department and organisation help to develop my skills as an apprentice to allow me to reach the competent level needed to pass out as a electrical fitter.

  • My salary is quite efficient in meeting my costs.

  • Yes there are opportunities to take and further your apprenticeship.
