Summer School Audit Intern Review

Summer School Intern - Over the past 2 weeks I have been taking part in many different tasks throughout several sectors (Audit, Business Restructuring, Corporate Finance, Financial Services, Pensions, Tax and VAT) within BDO which consisted of; Having a small lesson on each area of Accounting to learn the basics, Casting, Proof reading Financial Documents, Creating Profit and Loss Accounts, Balance Sheets and Statutory Accounts and Researching Different Companies.

After visiting different areas within Accounting I have learnt many new skills and developed on existing skills which will help me later in life. Not only will these skills help me within Accountancy, I can utilise them outside of work in everyday life to assist me with any task I am trying to complete.

I have thoroughly enjoyed the time I have spent at BDO, the employees have all been extremely helpful and have made me feel welcome, this has then helped me to relax instead of being nervous which has then lead to me enjoying my stay at the company more than I was expecting. The programme exceeded my expectations as I was able to have a taster in many different areas (other than just working within Audit) which then helped me to understand and broaden my knowledge throughout Accountancy .

After every task I was given I carried out each task to the best of my ability and after completion, employees expressed their gratitude and complimented me on the standard of my work, this made me feel more appreciated/ valued and I continued to work to such a high level.

The programme was very well structured, each day I was assigned to a certain sector and was given a quick overview (training) of the work within the area before being allocated a task to complete. I was made aware that if I had any problems everyone was available to help and they supported me throughout any problems that I encountered. I thought it was extremely good that I was able to move around and try out other areas instead of staying within Audit as it helped me gain vital experience to be able to decide which area I would like to work within.

My training provider constantly supported me throughout the two weeks I spent with BDO, they organised and directed me where to go when moving into different sectors of the company making it a much easier process for myself. If there were any questions or problems my training provider was more than happy to help and not far away, this was extremely helpful as it then helped me to proceed with my task instead of wasting time not knowing what the answer to the problem was.

The employer provided support where necessary and was always prepared to help if I had any questions or my training provider wasn't available to help. Due to the great help from my training provider my manager only needed to give a limited amount of guidance but I know they would have done the exact same job if not better than my mentor if I did need any help.

Due to the distance I have had to travel I don't think the salary provided will be able to cover the travel and hotel costs that I have encountered.

Unfortunately I was not made aware of any available company activities, social events or leisure/ sports clubs that took place outside of work.

The Summer School Programme has been a fantastic experience and has really helped me open my eyes to the world of accounting, the vast amount of knowledge I have gained within 2 weeks is amazing and have met some great people throughout my time spent with BDO.

Don't be nervous, all of the employees are extremely friendly and helpful. Its a fantastic opportunity that is available so try and glean as much information and experience from the programme as possible as it will benefit you later in life.
