  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I was shadowing a different Trainee each day that I was in the office. Each day I would usually proof read documents, type up letters, do some research and things similar to those. I also listened in to some conference calls and would talk to all of the other solicitors in the office.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have definitely improved my typing skills, which will be very useful for the future. I have also learned how to communicate with older people, and to listen to every detail of what my Trainee would say, as most things would be important.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I mostly enjoyed my programme, as the work that I did was generally quite interesting and gave me an insight into the work that is carried out on a daily basis in a law firm. However, I was expecting to be more involved in the actual work of my supervisor, so I was therefore a little disappointed that this didn't really happen.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Pinsent Masons?
  • I felt as though my supervisor would appreciate the work that I did, as most of it would help them out. However, as I would only do little tasks to help usually only my supervisor, I did not feel very valued by the others around me. Nevertheless, they were all extremely kind, and they did have lively conversations with me.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is very well organised, as we were given a programme at the beginning of our placement that did not change at all. The presentations given to us were well created, and this helped to get the information across to us precisely. We were given details of who to contact if we needed help which I felt was reassuring and useful.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • I received lots of support, as everyone that I worked with was enthusiastic in their work. This meant that even if they were busy they would answer my questions, which was very supportive. It also made me less nervous, and therefore I enjoyed my experience much more.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • We were provided with clear instructions about our placement before we even arrived at the office, which was very helpful. We were reassured throughout the week that if we needed help we could always ask, and were given details of those that could help. It was clear that Pinsent Masons wanted to help and support us during our stay.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • I did not get any funding for my programme, even though I had to spend £10 each day for transport. Lunch was only provided to us on our first morning, however I enjoyed going out to buy my own lunch each day.

    7/10

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • We were offered to play hockey with some of the other Trainees during the week, which was nice as we felt as though they were accepting us. When I wasn't at the office I went straight back home as I do not live in Edinburgh, so I wouldn't have been able to participate in any events anyway.

  • 9. Would you recommend Pinsent Masons to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • It has given me a very clear insight into the work of a solicitor, and has also helped me to understand what work is done inside an international law firm such as Pinsent Masons. I would recommend Pinsent Masons as they are an approachable, bold and connected firm that, and the programme can help with any future decisions you might need to make.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Pinsent Masons?
  • Think carefully about what you put into your application, and complete it with precision, but make sure it conveys your personality. Make the most out of your week at the office, as you are unlikely to experience the same things elsewhere, and if you have any questions at all, just ask. Everyone at the firm is very kind and approachable, so there is no need to be nervous.
