  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My job title is a 'Digital Marketing Apprentice'. My day-to-day tasks involve working with departments to create email and social campaigns, creating emails and writing social posts, working with departments to increase sales for particular products and tracking the success of campaigns.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learned many new skills and I am constantly being taught new things. My time management has significantly improved as I am more capable of prioritising. I have never been particularly skilled with IT but I have seen improvements in my skills and my confidence has improved. I have also been enrolled for an online marketing qualification which goes into a lot of detail - it take me longer than other to complete as the course presumes you have a basic level of marketing knowledge so I often have to lookup terms however it has been very helpful so far.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy my role however I still feel like I have a long way to go yet - I have been in my role for 8 months and I have 4 months left. I enjoy my work and the people I interact with on a daily basis are very supportive.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by 3M UK?
  • I think that 3M could do better to make me feel valued. The support I get is really great and my managers are happy to answer my questions. I do however think that I am not often not involved in conversations I should/could be involved in. I also don't think that information is as freely shared among my team as it should be - my team and I all work on the same thing and so I find it odd that I don't often know what is going on.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I really enjoy my coursework and I like that there is a very clear structure to it. My assessor (from out training provider, QA) visits us once a month and is FANTASTIC - incredibly helpful and is happy to go through the coursework with me in great detail. My team are also very supportive of my coursework and are happy to spend a proportion of my time at work studying.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • I cannot emphasis enough how amazing I think QA are. I find the wording of the coursework to be very ambiguous and so I like to sit down with my assessor and discuss what I am going to complete and how I will complete it so that she can read through it during our next visit (we have monthly visits with our assessor). My assessor is more than happy to go through my coursework with me and answer any questions I have. Any questions I email over to her are always answered.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • The general attitude towards supporting me is really positive. My team understand that there is a lot to learn and so they are more than happy to answer the many questions I have. At 3M there are a lot of acronyms and technical words that are used in day to day conversations so it can be very intimating however staff understand that there is a vast amount of jargon and so questions are welcome.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • I mean who doesn't want a raise? But I find my pay covers my travel costs, insurance and other monthly expenses. I have money left to enjoy myself however I do have to cut back in order to save money. I have been told that our pay is very good compared to other apprenticeships though so we are very lucky here at 3M.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • I don't really know much about work organised events however I know that they have had Christmas parties (I was unable to attend the most recent Christmas party), a conference in a really lovely hotel with a fancy dress party in the evening (seeing my boss dressed in a king's outfit - complete with a crown, a fur collared cape, and black eyeliner - has made my year) and I am aware that the office's gyms has classes 3 times a week. If I ever want to do something outside of work I generally organise it with colleges directly like going out for pub lunches, dinners, cinema trips etc.

  • 9. Would you recommend 3M UK to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I think 3M are really supportive of the apprenticeship scheme. This was 3Ms first year of running the program and so there were bound to be teething issues however the apprentices here are all open to give their feedback and I am very confident that 3M will take any criticisms board.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to 3M UK?
  • I would highly recommend looking up 3M's "Code of Conduct" principles. These principles are dotted around the building on billboards and 3M are very proactive in ensuring all staff abide by these principles. Also ensure that you do a lot of research about 3M prior to any applications or interviews - 3M is quite a complex company so know your stuff before your interview!
