  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • In attending the firm over the course of five days, I was introduced to the various departments in the office. Much of the work that I completed was provided to me by the trainees however at times the qualified solicitors asked me to complete some work for them. For example, in Corporate I calculated all of the shareholders' percentage of equity in a firm and in the Projects team I created a template from a previous document that had been submitted to a client for use in the future. Furthermore, the tasks given to me by the trainees included reading through documents and picking out the various legislation, finding the Northern Irish equivalent law to the provided English one, updating pieces of work that had expired. All of the work provided was suited to my level of knowledge and the employees were more than willing to offer any support if necessary.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • My social skills in particular have developed as working in a large office requires communication with various employees. Speaking to some of the Partners helped enhance my confidence in the work that I was completing as well.

  • The programme was thoroughly enjoyable and I would recommend it. It gives a brilliant insight into a corporate law firm as well as working in a large office. Anyone considering a career in law should definitely exploit this opportunity.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • While I was personally with Pinsent Masons for a week, some of the trainees spoke of how the company organised bike rides and each department enjoys a team bonding exercise once a year away from the office. The employees are also given half a day a month in order to take part in charity work.

  • 9. Would you recommend Pinsent Masons to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • As the company takes a real interest in its employees and those interested in a career in law.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Pinsent Masons?
  • Don't worry about asking questions. All of the people in the firm have been in the same shoes with not knowing how to complete a piece of work so make sure to ask questions. I would really recommend asking the trainees their advice on university and the application process as all of the ones I spoke to were really friendly and interested in what I was hoping to do.
