  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role is currently within the corporate tax team so one of my daily tasks is updating the tax accounts using this years statutory accounts. I work closely with my team and am able to ask them questions at any time, and gather information from external companies we prepare accounts for.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt a lot of new skills during my time at tarmac, both in terms of physical skills like using software, but also soft skills like my communication and presenting. I feel that i have become more knowledgeable and also more confident during my time here.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I am completing AAT level 4 while working 2 tax team rotations. I have enjoyed seeing the tax teams and completing the study, however at times it has been difficult to link my work to my studies. HTFT Partnership have provided great support throughout, as have managers and mentors within tarmac.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The two rotations within Tarmac were well organised, however a destination role is unclear at the moment for after my apprenticeship ends. HTFT has also provided a well structured study programme, including expected exam weeks, and been very supportive in helping students be ready for these deadlines. There has always been a person to ask, internally and externally, if I needed any help.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Tarmac are very supportive as my line manager is always available for any questions and they can also provide mentors from outside your current network to provide career advice rather than personal assistance. Furthermore, there are a lot of qualified accountants within the business that are always happy to help with study.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • HTFT are a great provider who give you all the materials you may require to complete your study and then host masterclasses to clarify the information and test your exam technique. They also provide study books and question banks that are really useful when preparing for exams. Furthermore, your HTFT mentor is always available to email with any questions and tend to be quick to reply.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • This has been a hard link for me to create due to my tax focused role and the bookkeeping focused exams. However, I have been involved in projects not related to tax, which has been really helpful in identifying the link, and seeing the studies in practice.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Tarmac offers a core skills programme for all early careers across the business. This includes 8 units of soft skill development and an opportunity to meet people from all over the country and business units. Also, there are societies available to join, such as LGBTQ+, Womens society, REACH, and an early careers community.

    9/10

  • 9a. Would you recommend Tarmac to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Tarmac are a very supportive employer who push its employees to be the best they can be, and be exposed to many different areas you wouldn't think existed, for example the marine business. Also, their is such a massive network within Tarmac to make lots of professional connections, but also have the opportunity to make friends with likeminded individuals.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Tarmac?
  • If you are thinking about applying, just do it as you never know how far your application will go, and you may surprise yourself. Tarmac have a strong focus on sustainability so it's important that this is something that you care about and are willing to work on. Be honest and authentic throughout the process, as Tarmac value individualism and fresh ideas.
