  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I liaise with sub-contractors and our supply chain to complete payments within contractual guidelines. I administer contracts and ensure we make money on construction projects by cost reporting, seeing where savings can be made, and ensuring we keep a positive cash flow.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt many new skills since the beginning of the apprenticeship, such as furthering my IT skills, especially within Excel, improving how i work within a team to reach a desired outcome, and ive learnt how to complete different commercial activities such as cost reporting etc.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy the programme alot, i think it is set out really well with a good work and study balance. I also have made some really good friends through this apprenticeship which is a bonus. I enjoy the work that i do and the topics i have to learn about.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I think the programme is very well organised and there is clear guidance throughout the apprenticeship. However, somewhere i believe could be improved is when going through the level 4 gateway, i believe there could be slightly more guidance - maybe sessions about the appendices you have to complete etc and a bit more of a push with target dates to complete different documents to help you keep up and on track, as although i havent struggled with this i could see it being a challenge for people especially when being balanced with work.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I believe i recieve a good amount of support from my employer allowing me to do everything i need to do to keep progressing, i do think reply times from the early careers team on queries could maybe do with being slightly quicker as in some instances i have been waiting a few weeks, luckily not for anything too urgent.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I receive vast amounts of support from my employer when working towards my qualifications and the support provided by the college partners too is of a very high level. I believe this is a key area the apprenticeship thrives in with not much improvement needed at all.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Without the qualification i am obtaining my knowledge of the industry as a whole as well as my specific role within the industry would be much worse and i would not understand half of the things i do now. The best way to learn is through qualifications and experience working together as the work consolidates the knowledge you've gained. I feel the quantity surveying apprenticeship could maybe do with more construction law topics, along with learning more about commercial reporting, how it works and different aspects within it to expose you to it more before going on to site as i hadn't really learnt too much about this.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes there are plenty of extra curricular activities to get involved in, futureBAM is a great way to get involved with these as all apprentices/graduates etc can come together to network whilst going on site visits, doing volunteering or having socials etc.

    9/10

  • 9a. Would you recommend BAM to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • It is a well thought out course, with good guidance and support. The company offer great opportunities and clearly value their employees highly. They will push you to complete as many qualifications and courses as possible and ensure you are constantly improving/progressing. I feel the ceiling i can reach as part of BAM is extremely high.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAM?
  • Go for it. It was the best decision i made and it sets you up perfectly to go into whatever aspect of the industry you desire. You'll meet great people, make great friends and progress quickly with the support that is provided for you. You are treated very well within the company and provided with so many opportunities.
