1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
Maintenance Engineer, in the first year of college the tasks are just to learn the basics of what the job entails. It includes fitting, electrical wiring, working with robots, working with PLCs, and the theory side is learning subjects that can be applied to my job role such as maths, health and safety, EEP etc.
2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
I have learned how to program robots, how to write PLC programs and wire PLC rigs. On top of this I've been educated thoroughly on electrical principles and electrical devices, as well as this I have been educated on how to electrically wire too.
3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
I enjoy the program and the team I am involved in, the company do a lot to support the apprentices progression.
4. How valued do you feel by Jaguar Land Rover?
I feel appreciated by my manager in plant, as well as the tutors in the college, each member of the team is treated fairly.
5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
The program could be slightly more organised in terms of assignments, being the first year of Trailblazer the wait to complete the assignments was dragged on far too long.
6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
I haven't needed much support throughout the program but I feel that it would be there should I require it.
6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
The JLR admins at college are very organised, they ensure everyone receives every piece of information they need throughout the apprenticeship.
7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
The salary meets my living costs comfortably as I still live at home, I travel 90 miles a day to and from college, but the salary package comfortably covers this and allows me to save for the future too.
8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
There are events that JLR hold to encourage teamwork and learning outside of the apprenticeship, also there are voluntary company events such as going to schools and colleges to speak about the program, the location for the college seems a bit out of the way for the majority of people on the course, many having to travel an hour each way each day.
9a. Would you recommend Jaguar Land Rover to a friend? *
9b. Why? *
The company values it's apprentices highly and the salary is very appealing to school leavers.
10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Jaguar Land Rover? *
Put all your effort into every stage of the application process, the score you obtain throughout the process will decide your career path in the first week of the course.
